16 free (or very cheap) ideas for the Easter school holidays in York
The Easter holidays are fast approaching. Hopefully, the weather will be kind to make entertaining the troops easy. However to make your life even easier (and kinder on your purse), we’ve rounded up 16 ideas (yes one for every day of the holidays!) of free, or very cheap activities to keep everyone busy over Easter.
1. The Great York Bunny Search – York City Centre 🐰🐰🐰

2. Easter Celebrations at Waterstones – Coney Street, York 📚📚📚
Waterstones is putting on a brilliant range of activities this Easter. Every day there will be a free Jemima Puddle-Duck hunt with treats to be won!
We’re Going on a Bear Hunt Week: 6-14 April. Singalong story times, a maze trail through the shop and make your own bear ears
Playtime with Peppa Pig Week: 15-21 April. Games, story times, activities and fun crafts

3. Create your own Easter egg hunt & Easter crafts 🐣🖍🖊
It doesn’t need to be anything elaborate to provide a lot of fun – and if the weather isn’t great, hiding eggs around the house is sometimes easier.
Everywhere is selling loads of Easter crafts and treats, Hobby Craft is always worth a look. The refillable eggs are great as they can be used year after year… There are also some great Easter craft activities going at Hobbycraft whilst you are picking up supplies. See Hobby Craft website to book.
4. Smile Cafe Easter Trail – Pocklington
There is an Easter trail around the play area to complete and if you find all the clues you receive a chocolate lolly. Easter colouring is also available inside the cafe. If you’ve never visited before there is an indoor soft play area for under fives and an outdoor play area with climbing frame, swings and ride-on-toys.

The Balloon Tree Farm Shop is having an Easter egg trail for 2 weeks. You can follow the rabbit around the farm to find clues and answer questions. You can claim an Easter egg prize at the end.

6. Do some Easter baking 🍫🍫🍫
Here are some super easy Easter baking ideas – a perfect activity if there is a rainy day over the holidays.
These Easter egg cookies are a brilliant way to use up all the chocolate you will have no doubt accumulated!
Making hot cross buns can be tricky and does take a while, so this variation of hot cross scones is super easy.
This no-bake easy fridge cake is another great one for using up the Easter chocolate.
7. Enjoy a spring walk – various locations in York & beyond 🌻🌻🌻
This time of year is fantastic to go on a walk and spot all the signs of spring. Check out the Mumbler post with the best spring walks in York and beyond. 8. Blue Sky Day Nursery Easter EGGstravaganza – Clifton Moor, York 🐣🎉🐰
Blue Sky Nursery is holding a free family fun session with an egg hunt, tombola, games and activities.

10. National Railway Museum – Leeman Road, York🚂 🚂🚂
The Flying Scotsman is visiting the Railway Museum this Easter and you can climb aboard for a unique view from the driving seat. There are plenty of activities going on including building your own Flying Scotsman to take home (£2 per model and pre-booking required) and a treasure hunt with a difference.

11. Very Legendary Easter Egg trail – Rowntree Park, York 🐣🌳🍫
Follow the clues around the park to discover the secret hiding place of the Easter Bunny to collect your chocolate egg. You can get a clue sheet from the bridge near the café between 10-30-11.30am.

12. Visit your local library – various locations 📚📚📚
Why not pop into your local library and pick up some new books to read together over the holidays? In addition to the books, many libraries have some great Easter themed book or craft events.

13. York Chocolate Festival – Parliament Street, York 🍫🍫🍫
Visit the York Chocolate Festival on Parliament Street and sample some delicious treats and the chocolate market and find out some chocolate tips at the demonstration tent. You can also meet some animals at the petting farm.

14. York Acorn RLFC Easter fun day – Thanet Road, York 🐰🎉🐰
There is plenty of Easter fun to be had at York Acorn RLFC on Easter Sunday. Egg hunts, a disco, bouncy castle, bingo and much more. The Easter bunny might also make an appearance…

16. Trafalgar Bay Easter Egg hunt – Nunnery Lane, York 🐣🐰🍫
A great event for adults & children (in the pub!). The doors open at 12 noon and at 12.15 you can run out to the beer garden to find as many eggs as you can. If you are attending this event please respond via the Facebook event so the Easter bunny can make sure there are enough eggs!
