Tucked away down one of the oldest streets in York, you’ll find Barley Hall, a restored medieval townhouse. Once home to a Lord Mayor of York, Barley Hall has returned to its 15th-century state, ready for a medieval feast. Little ones can make themselves at home, join in dress-up fun and activities in a Tudor School Room and experience what it would have been like to live in medieval England.

Have fun exploring The Bard at Barley Hall exhibition – see costumes worn by celebrities such as Al Pacino, Kate Winslet and more; have a go at shadow puppet theatre and guess the Shakespearean play from the smell box!

BOOKING LINK FOR ECHOES OF THE PAST

Friday 3rd November 2023, 10.30am-12pm and 1.30-3.00pm

Ammonites in the pebbles, corals in the cobbles, and oysters in the high street? Can you really find fossils on the historic streets of York? Join palaeontologist Fossiliam (Dr Liam Herringshaw) on our York Family Fossil Hunt and we’ll show you, yes you can!

We’ll meet outside the Yorkshire Museum in York Museum Gardens, and then visit a variety of places where fossils are hiding – in the gardens, in the cobbled streets, and even in the city’s buildings. You can’t take any of them home, but you will see some lovely – and surprising – fossils, and you’ll never look at the city streets the same way again.

The walk lasts 60-90 minutes, is step-free (although cobbled streets often aren’t suitable for people of restricted mobility), and is suitable for ages 3 and up. All under-18s must be accompanied by an adult.

Two different departure times – morning and after lunch slots available (10.30am and 1.30pm).

Please book your tickets via Eventbrite here. Price: £5 children (over 3s), £10 adults.

Come and crunch in leaves at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal this October half term 2023.

Autumn is one of the most colourful times of year to visit Fountains Abbey as the trees are looking their best, dressed in deep reds, bright yellows and shining golds. Put your wellies on, wrap up warm and marvel at this super seasonal show as you walk, run and explore around the estate.

Keep your eyes peeled for some of the autumn delights. See if you can spot any fat sweet chestnuts bursting open. Hear the stags roaring in the deer park as they compete for status in the annual rut? Feel the leaves crunch beneath your feet. What other autumn delights will you discover?

Get adventurous on a family day out. Zip, wobble and climb your way through the play area, wander through the abbey and become a water garden explorer, climbing up the Octagon Tower and through the dark Serpentine Tunnel.

There’s lots to do but don’t worry if you can’t fit it all in this time – we’ll be here another day! Become a member on your first visit and come back for free as many times as you’d like.

The Haunted Host
Wednesday 25th October – Sunday 5th November 2023
Every day, open 10.30-5pm (last admission 4pm)

Good morrow, fair visitor! My name is James Woodhouse and I am but one of fifteen Lord Mayors of York to have died in office. Every year, around the ancient feast of Samhain (summer’s end), we like to pass into the mortal world and reminisce over a spectral banquet. This year it is my turn to host, and I can’t think of a better location than the dining room of the Mansion House – a place I knew well in life.

If it’s not too much trouble, I would greatly appreciate your help making the final preparations…

Join us for the spooky season and work your way through our puzzling booklet, guiding you around York Mansion House. This will test the minds of all ages and is included with the price of admission.

No need to pre-book.

Free Halloween activities for kids from York Mumbler

We’ve created some Halloween activities you can print out and use at home to decorate your house, yourself and your pumpkins!

You can pick up lots of fun props, creepy decorations and spooky lights to transform your house this Halloween but why not use this as an opportunity to have some fun with the kids to create your own decorations this year. We have created some colour in and cut out sheets you can download and decorate. Check out our York Mumbler Pinterest page for more DIY Halloween decorations.

Click here to download the Mumbler Halloween colouring sheets

If you are struggling to get hold of a Halloween costume this year why not have a go at colouring in one of our ‘day of the dead’ masks. As well as using crayons, felts and pencils why not use some glitter, gems and beads to add some extra fun!

Click here to download the Mumbler Halloween masks

When it comes to carving a pumpkin this can often be tricky for smaller hands to cope with, so it’s often the parents who get to show off their creative skills. To help your child work out what design to carve on their pumpkin we have created a ‘design your own pumpkin’ worksheet. Encourage your child to experiment with a few different designs then choose their favourite to have a go at drawing onto the pumpkin for you to carve out for them. Check out the York Mumbler Pinterest board for some inspiration and see some amazing pumpkin designs.
