This September ninety budding performers will take to the stage at Joseph Rowntree Theatre to perform Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Over 150 people arrived to audition to take part in the production back in April with ninety selected to make the final cast which has been split across show week.
The production is based on the famous novel by Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory features an original score composed by Marc Shaiman with lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) and a book by David Greig. The score also pays homage to the Leslie Bricusse/Anthony Newley score from the 1971 film with songs from the motion picture including “Candy Man,” “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket,” “Oompa Loompa Song,” and “Pure Imagination.”
The world-famous Willy Wonka is opening the gates to his mysterious factory…but only to a lucky few. Young Charlie Bucket and four other golden ticket winners will embark on a life-changing journey through Wonka’s world of pure imagination including chocolate waterfalls, nutty squirrels and the great glass elevator, all to be revealed by Wonka’s army of curious Oompa-Loompas.
Be Amazing Arts, based in Malton, create unique performance opportunities for budding young performers from large scale musical theatre to unique immersive performances in unusual places.
James Aconley, Director at Be Amazing Arts said ‘‘Our Youth Musicals have gone from strength to strength in York over the last 4 years. We are blown away by the talent that comes forward from the young people auditioning and we just love to create as many opportunities for them to perform and nurture their talent as we can – we are now running two large scale musicals a year at Joseph Rowntree Theatre. We can’t wait to bring Charlie & the Chocolate Factory to the stage in just a few weeks. The young people have been working hard over the 10-week rehearsal period including a full week of intensive rehearsals during the summer holidays. Their focus and dedication is very impressive!’’
