Holgate is approximately 1 1/2 miles from York City Centre which is a pleasant 30-minute walk, 10-minute cycle or a quick bus ride.  Handy for commuting as Holgate is located near the A59, so it offers easy access to York Ring Road and the A64. The area known as Holly Bank in York forms part of Holgate and is broadly the triangle formed by Holly Bank Road, Campbell Avenue and Hamilton Drive.

  • The number 5/5A First York bus service runs from Strensall & Huntington, through the City Centre and onto Acomb via Poppleton and Boroughbridge Road.
  • The number 1 First bus service runs from Haxby & Wigginton, through the City Centre and on to Acomb via Holgate Road.
  • The number 16 Connexions bus runs between York and Acomb and serves Holly Bank/Hamilton Drive.
  • Close to the A59, so great if you need to commute to Harrogate or access York Ring Road to get to Leeds.
  • York Railway Station is just over 1 mile away from Holgate.

Open Spaces, Parks & Play Areas 🌳

Open Spaces & Parks 

  • West Bank Park is located in the middle of Holgate and looks small from the outside, but is an impressive 20 acres with two play areas, woodland walk & tree trails, pergola walk and plenty of space of picnics.  It also hosts a Summer Fair every year.
  • Homestead Park is a short drive or a 45 minute walk away (2 miles), and has a really beautiful garden with a large kids play area.
  • Hob Moor Nature Reserve is also close by, a great place for a long walk or to discover all sorts of wildlife and plants. You can easily walk across Hob Moor and under the railway underpass at Little Hob Moor to reach Nelson’s Lane playground and the Railway Pond in Dringhouses – a nice walk without having to go on any major roads.
  • You can also easily follow the cycle path to cut across Hob Moor from Holly Bank Road to reach the Knavesmire (York Racecourse) easily – a lovely open space with a tarmac circuit that is good for small bikes/prams/pushchairs.

Local Amenities 🛍


Holgate has a  couple of handy corner shops including a Premier Shop on Holgate Road and One Stop on Boroughbridge Road.

Less than a mile away are Acomb shops, which have pretty much everything you could ever need to save a trip into the city centre. A butcher, greengrocers, florist, pharmacy and even a beer shop are all within each reach, plus a handy Morrisons and Lidl.  Bluebird Bakery and Laughing Llama cafes are also within an easy walk of Holgate if you fancy coffee.

Holgate is well located for York City Centre, just a short bus or bike ride or it will take you about half an hour to walk in.

There are plenty of pubs and takeaways in Holgate, plus a handful of restaurants just a short stroll away in Acomb or enjoy the delights of the city centre.

Holgate also has its very own historic Grade 2 Listed windmill which is well worth a visit and often holds open days, as well as Santa visits! There’s a lovely view from Windmill Rise – one of the highest points of York – across to the Minster.  (Local fact: the Holgate Windmill roundabout won “Britain’s Best Roundabout” in 2012. If that doesn’t entice you to visit, then what will?).

Pubs, restaurants & cafes: 

  • Laughing Llama Coffee and Bistro, Acomb Front Street – family friendly coffee shop with upstairs play space for young children.
  • Bluebird Bakery, Acomb Road – bakery with cafe (plus it also hosts evening events including DJ nights at its Rise entertainment venue).
  • The Fox, Holgate Road – pub with outdoor seating/beer garden
  • The Holgate, New Lane – pub
  • Volunteer Arms, Watson Street – pub
  • Crystal Palace, Holgate Road – pub
  • The Ainsty, Boroughbridge Road – pub with an outdoor seating area
  • Zeera Spice, Lindsey Avenue – Bangladeshi restaurant
  • If you fancy something more upmarket – Hotel du Vin on The Mount is easily reachable from Holgate, especially if you use the pedestrian railway bridge from Holly Bank which comes out on Dalton Terrace.
