Enjoy an outdoor cinema experience this summer, in the beautiful Museum Gardens. Picturehouse will be showing films over 6 dates in the summer. Films start after sundown (approximately 20.30-21.00) so that you can enjoy the outdoor cinema at its best. Doors open at 19.30, so you can arrive early to enjoy drinks and snacks and settle in with your choice of seat.

This is the newest cinema offering in York and is based at the Vangarde Centre just close to Monks Cross. Cineworld York is a 13 screen multiplex cinema hosting a 382 seater Laser IMAX screen, Screen X and ViP propositions.

🚌 Silver Line service 9 runs from 07:00 to 21:40 every day from the Park and Ride next door into the city centre.
🚗 Coming off the A64 East take the A1036 Malton Road towards York and follow signs to the Park and Ride. If following the A1237 outer ring road follow the Monks Cross Link road to join the park. There is a landlord run car park outside of the cinema offering 4 hours free stay via ANPR system. The main park and ride is outside and offers a £5 all day fee. Cineworld does not own or operate any car park and conditions of use are subject to change.

City Screen is located on Coney Street in York boasting a lovely Riverside Café-Bar overlooking the River Ouse, and it is easily accessible by public transport. The Cinema has various screenings suitable for families alongside its general programme of films City Screen offers a varied programme of mainstream and independent movies. When films are rated U, PG, or 12A a family ticket (for two adults and two children) is available. The cinema is fully accessible for people with disabilities, there is a baby change facility in certain toilets (ask for a key), and the Riverside Café-Bar is welcoming to new mothers and children. High-chairs are available if needed.
👶🏼 Baby & Toddler Cinema – The Big Scream: This session is for parents and guardians with babies under one year old, every Wednesday morning at 11am. Babies go free! Toddler Time is for pre-school children and their parents and carers, every Friday morning at 11.30am. Tickets are £3 for children, free for accompanying adults.
👨👩👦👦 Kids Club: The popular Kids’ Club screenings are every Saturday morning, for children aged 3 – 12. There are activities in the cinema screen from 10.30, followed by a film at 11am. Tickets for children and accompanying adults are £3 each.
🧠 SEN / Autism Friendly Screenings: Second Sunday of each month. Adapted to help reduce anxiety and over-stimulation and ensure a safe, enjoyable cinema experience for people with autism, and their families, friends and carers. All tickets are £3 for all.

🚌 Most Bus Services go to the city centre – Coney Street is one of the main streets in the centre.
🚗 If coming by car you can take the park and ride into town or you could park at any of the city’s car parks – closest are probably Marygate, Bootham Row or at the other end of Coney street there is the Castle Car Park.

City Screen is brilliant. They have a kids half hour on Friday morning to get kids used to it. Usually, things like Bing, Hey Duggee etc. It’s really good.

If you want to try them with a shorter film first then city screen toddler time is fab – cinema experience but shorter film, (like Gruffalo etc). They are on every Friday and can take babies too.

Please understand we are unable to allow entrance to customers without babies in attendance for these screenings. Some weeks we may run two baby club screenings in one week.

🧠 SEN / Autism Friendly Screenings: These are at the Harrogate Everyman but in York they have audio description available on site and subtitled screenings weekly.

Fancy seeing the best kids films and family films with both adult and child tickets from only £2.49 per ticket? Vue’s Mini Morning sessions give both adults and kids the chance to experience big screen entertainment for a very small price. Mini Mornings are run every Saturday and Sunday morning from 10am, plus every day in the school holidays (with availability likely to change depending on when your child’s holidays occur).
🧠 SEN / Autism Friendly Screenings: Vue’s autism-friendly screenings, the lights are left on low, the sound is turned down and trailers and adverts aren’t played. When you book tickets for an autism-friendly screening, you’ll be asked to choose allocated seats but we do encourage guests to move around during the screening and make a bit of noise. Vue York hosts an autism-friendly screening at 10am on the last Sunday of every month. You can book autism-friendly screenings on the website.

Riding Lights moved into its first permanent home in York, in 1999 and it opened to the public in May 2000. Friargate Theatre has a 100-seat studio theatre on the first floor and a ground-floor rehearsal room which is also a 50-seat cafe-style performance space and workshop.
At Friargate Theatre, Riding Lights Theatre Company rehearses and perform their own work. It is also home to the company’s four Youth Theatre groups for people under 18.

The Grand Opera House York is part of the Ambassador Theatre Group. Originally not intended as a theatre, the Grand Opera House York has undergone many changes and is now the county’s biggest fully operational theatre and the home of live entertainment in the region. It hosts touring productions of West End Musicals and Drama, Comedians, Opera, & Ballet and not forgetting the fantastic annual pantomime!

The Joseph Rowntree Theatre is a registered charity and located in a Grade II listed theatre. It was built by the Rowntree Village Trust in 1935 and is the only remaining Rowntree building still used for its original purpose – a place for recreation and entertainment.
A volunteer board of 13 trustees manages the theatre, supported by over 170 volunteers working across all areas, from stage crew to box office, fundraising and marketing.
The theatre has 365 seats and is aiming to expand into a space for the local community as a multiple-use space where there is a place for everyone.

York Theatre Royal is located in the centre of York and has been producing great drama for over 250 years and is one of the country’s leading producing theatres. Each year the theatre entertains over 200,000 people with its wide variety of performances, events and activities. The Theatre Royal also has a cafe with a children’s play area and free WiFi.

Theatre@41 Ltd is a creative hub and performing arts centre found in the heart of York. Once home to the famous John Cooper youth theatre, they try to further both local and emerging professional theatre.
