NYMR – Behind the scenes weekend

May 5, 2018 - May 7, 2018

Explore ‘Behind the Scenes’ at one of the most popular heritage railway lines, where you will be able to take a sneaky peek at the areas we usually have closed. This event will showcase all the work that goes into keeping the wheels turning. Check out the engine sheds at Grosmont, learn about the infrastructure and bridges at Goathland, and much more.

Pickering Station

Visitors will be able to see what goes on inside the Carriage and Wagon workshop, headed up by Manager Kieran who recently starred in the Channel 5 documentary ‘The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard’. The Archive and Education departments will also be producing a display on Platform 2, on the historic bridges along the line, with original pen and ink plans displayed in a Draughtman’s drawing office.

Visitor Car Park:
• Turntable demonstrations will be taking place at 10:30, 12:30 & 14:30.
• Explore the Atkins building and join the London & North Eastern Railway Coach Association (LNERCA) and Pickering Wagon Group.

Platform 2:
• Take a tour of the Archive Department between 10:00 and 16:00 (Saturday only).
• Don’t miss out on a great opportunity to travel on a brake van ride with shuttles operating between main train services each day. A limited number of diesel shunter cab rides will also be available (Additional charges apply).
• Children can dress up and become a railway signaller between 12:00 and 16:00 in the demonstration signalbox.
Levisham & Goathland Stations

Passengers travelling to Levisham station will be treated to signalbox tours and there will be a talk on the history of Goathland Station including the Pelton Wheel. There will also be information about the vital repair works needed to the bridges located on the approach to the station, as well as plans to install an exciting new education carriage.

• Travel to Levisham Station and take a tour in a working signalbox between 10:00 and 16:00.
• Continue your journey and enjoy a talk on the history of Goathland Station, including the Pelton Wheel.
• Wagon shunting demonstrations will take place between 10:00 and 15:00 each day.
• Learn about our £9.2m Appeal – Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey.

Grosmont Station

Not only that, at Grosmont, the operating hub of the railway, there will be the chance to walk through the repair shop and running shed to get a first-hand insight into the work being carried out on locomotives and rolling stock. See the steam crane in action between 10:00 and 15:30 (Saturday & Sunday only). North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG) and the Junior Volunteers will also be on hand to provide further details about the Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey appeal, as well as offering a selection of cakes and hot beverages for sale.

Paul Middleton, Head of Traction and Rolling Stock at the NYMR and star of ‘The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard’, said: “Being at the railway for over 20 years, it’s great to open up the engine sheds for people to get up close and personal with the lifeblood of rail history. I am particularly proud this year, as my own steam locomotive (Lucie – the Belgian steam tram) will be on display.”

Interested in volunteering at the railway? A volunteer ambassador will be at each station over the event to discuss what volunteering involves and how you can join the team!
