The York Irish Association proudly presents it’s fifth annual York Irish St. Patrick’s Weekend Festival on Saturday 16th March and Sunday 17th March. Just like the Festival in previous years, the celebrations will take place in a marquee in St. Sampson’s Square in the city centre.

To mark the celebrations, part of the City Walls (close to Lendal Bridge) and Cliffords Tower will both be lighting up in Green from Friday 15th March to Sunday 17th March as part of Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening Initiative where famous attractions and sites around the world light up in green to mark St. Patrick’s Day. These will join other famous attractions going green including the Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Victoria Falls, the Eden Project in Cornwall, Nation Towers in Abu Dhabi, Niagara Falls, the β€˜Welcome’ sign in Las Vegas, Sleeping Beauty castle at Disneyland Paris, the Sydney Opera House, Burj al Arab, Christ the Redeemer statue, the London Eye and many others.

The activities in the marquee meanwhile take place from 11am until 10.30pm on Saturday 16th March and from 11.00am – 5.00pm on the Sunday which is St. Patrick’s Day itself. The activities are all about celebrating and continuing to bring an understanding of Irish tradition and culture to York, bringing fun and enjoyment to the city for people of all ages who have an interest in Irish culture and celebrating the unique connections between York and Ireland.

Throughout the weekend there will be music performances from the likes of singer songwriter Paula Ryan, Harpist Catriona Cannon and duo, 2 Bob. The entertainment on both days will finish with ceilidhs with Fiddlers Wreck and the New Fox Band. There will also be Irish dancing performances from the O’Connor Academy of Irish Dance, Field Academy of Irish Dance and St.Aelred’s Irish Dance school. Youth folk group, Folkestra, will kick off the Festival on the Saturday morning.

There will also be a history of the Irish in York display, a gaelic football demonstration and Irish food and drink. The whole event is free to attend, there will be children’s facepainting and a raffle with great prizes.
