Now the Christmas holidays have come to an end, it’s time to refocus! Time to reflect on the past year and plan any changes you wish to make in the year ahead.
Whatever your health, fitness & wellbeing resolutions, setting effective goals from the start can really help you along the way.
Set realistic and achievable goals – Setting both short term and long terms goals is helpful, as you feel a sense of achievement when you reach the smaller goals, and it motivates you to carry onto the bigger ones. Setting one long term goal without smaller ones can lead to feel disheartened and this can lead to giving up. The classic is “I’ll run a marathon” – great to have as a long term goal, but how about jogging 3 times a week for 15mins first?! If your goals are realistic, and you are motivated to achieve them, then YOU WILL!
Be Specific – “I’ll exercise more” is far too vague! “I’ll go for a power walk 3 times a week for 20 mins” is much more specific and you will know ‘yes or no’ if it’s been achieved.
Write down your goals – It can actually help you achieve them. It adds an extra layer of commitment and accountability. Commitment is key, and can also be achieved by arranging to exercise with a friend (you don’t want to let them down so stick to the plan) or paying in advance for classes/membership – once you have invested you are again more likely to see it through!
