Phoenix Under 5s Preschool offers term-time places to children aged 3 to 5 and Tweenies sessions for 2-year-olds.
Preschool sessions run Monday-Friday, 8:30-15:30. Tweenies sessions run every Thursday from 9:00-11:00.
Following the beautiful style and ethos of the Curiosity Approach, our sessions include a wide range of open-ended, child-led experiences and activities aimed at fostering children’s natural creativity while and building confidence and independence. Situated within the Park Grove Primary Academy building, our preschool has its own outside play space, as well as access to a wonderful forest school area. Our highly qualified and experienced team works closely with staff at Park Grove to ensure smooth transitions for those children progressing into reception at Park Grove, as well as those transitioning to other primary schools.
At Phoenix, we are passionate about treating every child as an individual, encouraging them to follow their own ideas and interests while guiding them to enhance their own learning. Our environment focuses on natural materials with endless possibilities, enabling children to harness their imagination and develop at their own pace.
On Thursdays, Phoenix runs a Tweenies session for two-year-olds. A gentle first step into preschool, these small group drop-off sessions offer children the chance to meet our lovely staff and experience the Phoenix environment in preparation for joining the preschool. While we encourage parents to drop children off to play independently during these sessions, we understand that this can be a challenge initially. Individual arrangements can be made while children settle into the setting and become confident and familiar with our staff.

St Paul’s enjoys a unique position as the only nursery school in York.
Our core aim is to prepare children for Primary School by offering the same experiences in a much more informal setting. We have optional uniforms, mini assemblies and PE sessions, as well as performing Christmas and end of year concerts for parents in the local church.
We have an enhanced resource provision for special needs children as well as having highly skilled SEN TAs in nursery. In addition to our ‘core’ sessions we also offer a breakfast, after-school and holiday club. As we are a school, our staff have access to the same training opportunities as all primary schools across York, so their skill sets are impressive.
At the heart of what we offer to children and families, is our impassioned approach to nursery education.
We are open 7:30 – 6pm term time with an optional holiday club too. Children may enrol from 2.5 years old. Admissions to the nursery start in January, April and September. Children may be placed on the waiting list from two years old.
Please come and see us in action – all visits are welcome!

Childhood is a precious time and our popular school provides a warm and nurturing environment from birth to age 16.
Rated “Good” by Ofsted in all areas, we start with our beautiful Gentle Beginnings groups: a calm supportive space to nourish your relationship with your new baby (up to 18 months), under the gentle guidance of holistic Early Years specialist, Dorothy Marlen. (First session is free).
From here our families move on to Parent and Child Sessions (up to age 3 ½) in an exciting room full of enriching play equipment and interesting places to explore – with craft activities, songs, storytelling and puppet shows and a home-made meal where the children help prepare the food and lay the table.
After this, many families choose to join one of our four wonderful Kindergartens in the main school. In all our groups and classes, numbers are kept deliberately small so we can fully support each individual child. This means we are often oversubscribed – please book early!
You can contact us at any time to discuss your child or pop along to one of our Open Days and Enquirers’ Mornings where a warm welcome awaits: email [email protected] or call 01904 654983.
