Eating out with kids can sometimes be something of a challenge (understatement of the year!) There are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants in the York area which really do welcome children and families so I’ve compiled a list of them here.
These places are not all ‘exclusively’ for families or children but they have all shown thoughtful touches or great facilities (things like pushchair access, changing facilities, highchairs and so on)
At York Mumbler we are always looking to ‘spread the word’ if we find out about any little gems, so if you know of a pub, restaurant or café that should be included in this listing then please contact us here.
We are an independent coffee shop in Haxby that have something for everybody. All food is freshly made, using local independent suppliers. We try to cater for most tastes and usually have gluten free bread, quiche and cake available. Our food is freshly made and cooked to order and also, if you love the tea and coffee as much as we do, we sell them in retail bags to take home.
Curious Coffee Company in Haxby. Just amazing….. try the French toast with salted caramel, peanut butter and banana…. heaven on a plate! (The Coffee is amazing too)

Our great Samuel Smiths pub is wonderful for kids as there is a huge garden out the back with a play area. We serve delicious home cooked food daily. Our food is simple, fresh and local.
We are family friendly with toys to play with and space for prams.
We bake everything in-house and often have gluten free and vegan cakes on offer. We also have soya/oat milk. We can’t guarantee nut free due to the size of our kitchen.
We discovered Daughter Cafe on Clifford st last week. It was great, toys, books and extremely child friendly staff. It’s lovely, would highly recommend it.

Relax and take in the calming atmosphere in our stylish York restaurant. Housed in one of York’s oldest buildings, our ground floor health cafe and juice bar and elegant first floor restaurant offers Californian-style, healthy, naturally-wholesome dishes and gluten free cakes. We’re dog friendly too – so bring them along on your next visit! 100% Gluten free afternoon tea available.
Filmore and Union is my top choice, they were really lovely when I was breastfeeding and are very accommodating, baby changing a little snug but it is a very small building.
