Eating out with kids can sometimes be something of a challenge (understatement of the year!) There are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants in the York area which really do welcome children and families so I’ve compiled a list of them here.
These places are not all ‘exclusively’ for families or children but they have all shown thoughtful touches or great facilities (things like pushchair access, changing facilities, highchairs and so on)
At York Mumbler we are always looking to ‘spread the word’ if we find out about any little gems, so if you know of a pub, restaurant or café that should be included in this listing then please contact us here.
The award-winning farm shop and newly expanded café specialises in home-grown fruit, veg, and local and rare breed meats, plus the finest homemade food including quiches, scones, soups and seasonal dishes. Pick your own in the summer. A great day out for all the family – entertain the children in the brand new play area and visit the animal corner with feeding platform, while you relax in the cafe garden.
Our superfresh homegrown asparagus crop is now ready. The asparagus crop thrives in our sandy soil, being a mediterranean crop, and the quality and taste of the yield benefit tremendously from this. Watch out for the asparagus specialities in the cafe and on the deli in the farmshop.
Our excellent delicatessen serves a wide range of delicious hot and cold goodies. The bakery and deli ovens are also on display so you can see the cakes being baked in all their glory. There is also a sandwich station where superfresh sandwiches will be made to order in front of the customers. We are making it easier for customers to eat on the go with take away tea and coffees from the deli, and a good choice of easy lunches with hot and cold sandwiches and pies to suit busy lifestyles.
Opening Times: Open seven days a week, Farmshop 9am-5.30pm, Cafe 9am – 4.30pm.
Not only is the food in the cafe excellent and service lovely; the outdoor play area with tractor/digger themes is perfect for my vehicle-obsessed toddler. Two goats to pet too, plus pick your own fruit in season, and a Hallowe’en pumpkin patch. The produce in the farm shop is wonderful too (although I always spend a fortune in the shop on lovely stuff!), and plenty of parking.

My son loves the playground as you can sit in the cafe and watch them play. As well as the pick your own being really good in the picking seasons and the farm shop and cafe food is lovely.

Amazing with kids. It’s also often pretty quiet on a lunchtime. They do small portions of any dish, my two generally share one. Everyone is super friendly and the food is great. Highly recommend. And they give the kids a lolly at the end – counts as a win for my girls! xx

Founded in 1985 by an ex-railwayman with a passion and enthusiasm for all things connected with railways, The Sidings is built around 5 Pullman style railway carriages. These have been developed to create the ultimate railway experience. Part of the carriages have been converted in to a dining area, allowing tables of four to overlook the track.
It’s a bit out of town but The Sidings in Shipton by Beningbrough are really good.

A traditional style pub with modern twist. The open fires and cosy snug help to create a relaxed atmosphere and welcome people to sit and chat over a drink and light bite. The dining area has both intimate and large dining tables perfect for a lovely meal for two by the coal burning fire or friends getting together for a celebration and unique dining experience. All of this is topped with a beautiful oak bar stocking draft beers, fine wines and every month a tasty selection of locally produced guest ales. Round the back of the pub is a sun trap beer garden where visitors can enjoy a drink and snack under a beautiful aged oak with a secure children’s play area.

We might be known as a fantastic Restaurant, but we’re also still the traditional pub we’ve always been. Pop- in, without a reservation, for a drink from our selection of Real Ales, Fine Wines, or even Pimms & Fizz on Tap.
Try The Bluebell at Arkendale … they have a dining area which can cater for that sort of number (I saw large group of about 20 together at a long table). The food is lovely there.

The Rythre Arms has been the Steak Mecca of Yorkshire for over 32 years. We are situated in a traditional, centuries old, pub restaurant nestled between Tadcaster and Selby and serve the best locally sourced beef available. Our steaks are matured and butchered on the premises and range in size from the modest 6 ounce Fillet to the Rythre Monster that comes in at an awe-inspiring 78 ounces!
Rythre Arms is amazing! You get loads of food and Home made chips. Bit pricey but well worth it. They do an early bird menu which is cheaper! We go every year.
