You can volunteer to litter๐. This is a brilliant opportunity for those that care about the appearance of their local area and want to give something back to the community.
York Council will provide training, litter pickers and specific green bags that you leave next to any York Council rubbish bin for collection.
To find out more see the York Council website or email the Environment and Community team.
It is recommended you use a litter picker and some gloves as a minimum and you will also need a bag to put the litter in. Please ensure you have considered the weather and are wearing suitable clothing and shoes.ย If it is warm, consider suncream and hats.
If you see any dangerous, poisonous or hazardous items, including syringes, report them to York Council immediately. Do not attempt to move them yourself.
Let Keep Britain Tidy know how much litter picking time you will pledge during the Great British Spring Clean.
You can pledge up to 24 hours of litter picking at a time. Keep in mind it is actually quite tiring as you have to walk in quite a slow, stop/start manner and carry a bag that gets heavier! An hour or two in one session is normally plenty!
Picking litter as a group? You can also pledge as a group, which at the moment is up to a maximum of 30 people.
If you tell Keep Britain Tidy about how much litter picking you complete, they can count it towards their million-mile litter picking mission!
๐ย Over two million pieces of litter are dropped in the UK every day!
๐ย The cost to the taxpayers for street cleaning is over ยฃ1 billion a year!
๐ย Litter does not clean itself away and can take years to degrade, causing harm to wildlife and habitats. Dropped food, from half-eaten sandwiches to apple cores, can attract pigeons and vermin
๐ย Research has shown litter contributes to further crime and people feel less safe in areas that are littered.
