Family Holiday Inspiration with recommendations from parents in York

Balearics

The Belearic islands are popular with families due to their sunny climate and only a short flight away. For recommendations of specific resorts and hotels see the Overseas Family Friendly & All Inclusive page.

Majorca

“Majorca is a great place for families, especially little ones. The sea tends to be shallow for a long way before it starts to get deep so you can paddle with them. Not too long for the flight. We went all inclusive with Jet 2 last year there and found their deals the best. The baggage allowance is great and all included in the cost. We’ve been to various parts of Majorca over the years and would highly recommend it.” KW, Jan 18

Menorca

“Cala’n Forcat / Cala’n Blanes very much family oriented brilliant entertainment in every bar for children.” LDK, May 18

“I’ve just got back from Menorca it was so child friendly in Cala’n Forcat, all restaurants have child play areas in etc. It was great!” LE, June 18

Fuerteventura

“Costa caleta is fab and chilled.”  AG, June 18

“Fuerteventura or Lanzarote each equally beautiful. Went to Lanzarote in September (Playa Blanca) and it’s gorgeous.” CE, Jan 18

“Fuerteventura. Really child friendly. We’ve just booked a hotel right in front of beach there all inclusive for a week.”  GS, Apr 18

Centre Parcs – Europe

“Check out center parcs abroad (Netherlands, France, Belgium and the Netherlands). We are going for the 3rd year running this year, a week for 4 in August from €500, for exactly the same as the UK ones but warmer weather.”  GC, Feb 18

“We have done one in Germany and Holland but not France. We thought they were great. But we used it as a base to go out walking/cycling/exploring in the mornings and then hit the pool in the afternoon. Not sure if they had as many activities to book. We didn’t go to do the activities as our son was very young. Accommodation was fairly similar to UK. Pools again similar.”  JB, Feb 18

Croatia

“Croatia is lovely and unspoilt but not sandy beaches.” KM, Sept 18

“We flew to Split and stayed in Omis. We were the only English speaking in the hotel! We took a boat trip to Brac which was gorgeous.” KM, Sept 18

“We stayed in Rabac in Croatia in June, it was amazing! Not sandy beaches though. We went with my 6 & 3 year old and we all wore beach shoes.” LJG, Sept 18

“Pag is nice, there is good camp Simuni. Beautiful beaches, clear water.” GRW, Sept 18

“We stayed at a resort in Pula.” AJH, Jan 18

“Croatia is lovely – we went to Istria last year and loved it. BUT very very few sandy beaches. We had a 4 1/2 yr old with us who was happy to play in sea, look in rock pools, swimming pool but could imagine if he had been younger the lack of sandy beaches might have spoilt it for us). We flew in to Pula.” JB, Sept 18

“We went to the Croatian Island of Korkula this year..we based ourselves in the little bay of Lumbarda..perfect for families & adults (no hoards of party-goers!) with small sandy beaches (the only sandy beaches in this part of the world) that very gently sloped into the sea that was as calm as a lake. Not touristy, not too busy even in August, very few Brits, great for water activities, kayaking, little motor-boat hire (we had a fab day bobbing around the coast & stopping off on uninhabited islands), & little local evening events…also it’s only 15 minutes across to the mainland by ferry which kids (& adults!) find exciting! We hired a car but there were buses and water-taxis from Lumarda to the beautiful medieval town of Korkula (10 minutes away) where there were great restaraunts/bars/lovely shops etc, also a port where ferries to other places can be caught. It was very classy yet very relaxed..wonderful!” KL Sept 18

Eurocamp

Eurocamp are a British holiday company with holiday parks all over Europe.
For recommendations of specific parks take a look at the Overseas self catering/camping page.

“We did Eurocamp for a number of years with pre-school age kids. Great value out of season and they will provide lots of child related stuff (bed guards, travel cots, potty etc) so you don’t have to take it with you. The campsites are lovely with bbqs, kids pools, play areas etc.” NG, Feb 18

“I second Eurocamp. Went for the first time last year and couldn’t fault it. The sites are fab for kids and loads to do but also lovely pools with water parks etc.”  KC, Jan 18

France

“We did Eurocamp last year in France and it was brilliant, really well equipped tents, and there’s someone on site if you have any problems. The only thing I missed was the bathroom, so this year we are doing the mobile home version. French campsites are so good.”  SD, May 18

“We have done lots of French Eurocamp and Tuscany. Both lovely. The French sites tend to have more modern accommodation in my experience but still aircon, spotlessly clean etc. Loads to do for kids and generally fab campsites, pools and play areas. Only been outside of school hols so no experience of kids clubs.”  NG, Feb 18

“We flew from Leeds Bradford to Nice, hired a car from the airport and drove to the Eurocamp Holiday Green Park near Frejus last summer hols. The South of France is beautiful and the site had everything the kids loved, great pools, kids clubs etc. Also fab having the car to get out and explore. I would def recommend.” CC, Feb 18

“We have done the train 3 times to France. Twice we’ve been to the south of France (St Raphael and Antibes), Nice airport is very close by. There’s a Eurocamp at Frejus which is highly recommended. All the towns on the south are well connected by trains, we had days out in Cannes, Nice and Monaco.” KS, May 18

Holland

“We did Eurocamp in Holland last year and it was great fun. Beach, pool, play parks and a safari park all on the campsite. Really easy ferry from Hull and weather is warm but not too hot.” LG, Apr 18

Italy

“We did Eurocamp Italy and stayed in a tent it was amazing! The camp facilities were fab! And general cleanliness was would to be expected of a camp site. We have bit the bullet and booked France in sept but in a caravan this time as the tent was just far too hot.” BC, May 18
