This Dance Special is a Joint Sponsored Blog.
Not only is dancing so much fun, there’s a long list of other benefits too, including: making friends, getting fit, improving confidence, reducing stress and providing a creative outlet.
Luckily in York we are completely spoilt for choice when it comes to dance class options, there’s such a variety of dance styles and with classes running throughout the week at various times and locations, there’s bound to be a class to suit.
Have a scroll through the options and get in touch directly with the dance school who can advise you further about getting involved!

At York Stage School we believe a strong technique is what takes a performer from being good to being great.
To compliment our award-winning Stage School classes we also offer a range of dance classes with work as an addition to our weekly Acting and Singing classes.
These classes are open to all children, whether they attend York Stage School already or not, and are designed for those who wish to develop their technique in the key dance disciplines of Ballet, Jazz and Tap.
Classes will involve a range of exercises to develop a strong technique in the relevant discipline which will be put into practise in small sections of choreography as part of the class. Students will work towards small workshop based presentations to parents at the end of term.
Professional dancers and choreographers will lead the sessions, Emily Taylor leads our jazz and tap classes whilst Danielle Mullan-Hill leads our ballet classes.
These one hour Ballet/Jazz/Tap classes run from our studios at Theatre@41 Monkgate.

Perform with Emma Bassett Dance Act and Sing classes prides itself on building a child’s confidence and improving their self-esteem for their everyday lives, as well as learning new skills in Dance Acting and Singing for the stage.
Emma Bassett owner and teacher of Perform says…
“Since an early age I have participated in all aspects of the Performing arts. My passion led me to train at a London University gaining a BA HONS Degree in Dance/performing arts. After graduating I gained my P.G.C.E qualification and set up my own performing arts school in York. Alongside this I got the job as dance teacher at York College where I have taught over a variety of courses such as A level dance, Musical theatre and Acting. I set up and was course leader of the ‘BTEC Extended Diploma in dance’ course which was the first one in the Country. From this my students went on and became extremely successful gaining places in top dance schools and universities such as London theatre school, Masters, Middlesex and LIPA, to name only a few.
My Perform classes are held in the dance studio at York college and venues at Copmanthorpe and Bishopthorpe. I put on regular shows held at the York Joseph Rowntrees theatre every year. The children I teach absolutely love performing in our shows and come off stage “buzzing” wanting to do it all over again.”
