Did You Know?
There is overwhelming evidence that highlights that when a woman feels empowered in her birth experience and has continuity of care during her transition to motherhood, this has a positive impact on her health and well-being – as well as on her relationship with her baby, and the wider family unit. Perinatal anxiety and birth trauma are at an all-time high, and the tragedy for birthing women and families is the impact it has on their experience of parenting, and their little one’s attachment style.
“I didn’t feel like I was being treated as an individual… I actually found out through working with Melody that I had endless options … Mel was instrumental in ensuring I had the birth of my dreams!” (Mary Benson, client, 2022)
Doulas provide continuous support for the whole family through pregnancy, birth and the early weeks of parenthood. They fill a role that new parents and families have always needed, offering evidence-based information, flexible, practical, and emotional support in homes as well as in hospitals. Find out more HERE . Our A-class doula team consists of an authentic midwife, IBCLC and perinatal emotional wellbeing coach.
“If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it.” (Dr John Kennel, paediatrician and researcher, 2015)

I have been a midwife since 2000 and have worked most of that time independently. In the last 20 years my clients have taught me more than I thought I needed to know about being a good midwife, each one in a different way. I am now even more convinced that a person’s pregnancy, birth and postnatal experience has the potential to be highly transformative, joyful and empowering. However I am also deeply conscious of the fact that sometimes pregnancy or birthing a baby can be the catalyst for physical, emotional or spiritual difficulties, and I am committed to walk alongside you through the sometimes hard to navigate muddle that early parenthood can bring.
I provide full pregnancy, birth and postnatal care or one-off appointments, birth planning sessions and appointments to explore your previous birth. I can also accompany you to hospital appointments to act as your advocate and a sounding board if you wish (as long as Covid allows). If you have booked full care, I usually see you monthly from booking, every two weeks from 32 weeks and then weekly from 36 weeks. None of this is set in stone, sometimes visits will be more frequent and sometimes less frequent, always according to your needs.
I always strive to provide you with the information you need to make the choices that are right for you. And there will be no judgement from me for the choices you are making. But I will always have your back. I have two older children myself, both born with an independent midwife present. I’m registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and a member of the Royal College Of Nursing (RCN). I won ‘Best Healthcare Professional’ in the 2016 Gentle Parenting Awards and was shortlisted for ‘Best Midwife’ in the 2017 MAMA Awards. I enjoy knitting, cooking and as of late, gardening! I also have a husband, 4 cats and a slightly dark sense of humour on occasion.

York Home Birth Support Group is a parent-led, peer support group with a focus on sharing understanding and experience surrounding physiological birth. We meet on the first Sunday of every month from 3-5pm to share stories of births at home or planned home births that have transferred to hospital. Please feel free to come at any stage of pre-pregnancy or pregnancy to learn more about home birth, ask questions or to share your birth story.
Meet friends and gain support in making decisions that are right for you.
You will be supported and respected whatever your journey. If you are not planning a home birth but wish to discuss your birth choices in a supportive environment, you are also welcome. Partners and children welcome too.
The group is run by a team of volunteers who are parents with experience of home birth.

At Kin Body & Sole we offer antenatal hypnobirthing classes from our beautiful clinic in Clifton Green. I qualified in hypnobirthing through the fabulous The Little Birth Company – set up by a midwife and clinical hypnotherapist. I did the training as I love chatting about all things birth and babies. I am passionate about empowering women to be informed about the choices available to them, understand the physiology of birth and hear the reality of all that it can entail. I believe knowledge is power; I see so many women postnatally who feel cheated, ill-informed or unsure that I want to change this. Additionally, as a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist I am well placed to advise about positioning for birth, pelvic floor health and postpartum recovery. Having birthed 3 babies myself at home using hypnobirthing techniques I know that they can have a massively positive impact on someone’s birth experience.
So, if you want to know what birth really involves, receive useful tips to aid your birth and recovery plus you want a course that’s more than just hypnobirthing then please get in touch.
p.s. you also receive a great goody bag and money off a Mummy MOT.

The Yorkshire and Humber region have recently launched the Maternal Medicine Network (MMN). The aim of the MMN is to provide expert and equitable care to women/ birthing people with medical conditions such as heart conditions, kidney and liver disease and neurological conditions (To name but a few!)
The MMN is 1 of 14 networks across England. More information about the network can be found at:
www.maternalmedicine.org.uk
As the network is new and evolving, it is important that we develop a service with the people who will be using it. If you have a medical condition and you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or have recently been pregnant and would like to give feedback or help develop/ review resources, please contact Debbie Scott (Consultant Midwife for the MMN) at Debbie.scott14@nhs.net
Experience the perfect balance of relaxation, laughter and exercise – a wonderful way to unwind and stay healthy during your pregnancy.
Our classes are expertly designed to take a holistic approach to an expectant mums’ physical and mental well-being, combining relaxation with cardiovascular exercises to help prepare the body for birth.
Our teachers pass antenatal swimming training that is accredited by the Royal College of Midwives Trust, our own extensive aquanatal training and STA Aquacise/Aquanatal and Antenatal Swimming. This means that you are in the safest possible hands as you work out and relax.
Classes take place in the soothing, comforts of pools, providing one of the safest ways to exercise in pregnancy. The water supports your joints whilst also providing resistance work for all the muscles, strengthening your back and abdominal muscles ready for carrying your baby around!
There’s a science behind it too! Exercise and relaxation release your body’s natural happy hormones, endorphins, which suppress pain and help you (and baby) feel calm – not only helpful in later pregnancy, but also really important during and after birth.
Classes are booked in 6 week blocks and take place at the Roko Health Club on Wednesdays at 7:00pm.
