In this post we will share with you what attracted some of Haxby and Wigginton’s current residents to the area, along with some of their top tips for getting the most out of life there. Plus, Haxby and Wigginton’s hidden gems are revealed!
Haxby is a thriving small town lying just outside York’s outer ring road, adjacent to the village of Wigginton. Both areas are large enough to have their own network of businesses, amenities and community events but still retain the feel of a village.
The presence of three great primary schools and a respected secondary school was one of the top motivations for choosing the area. But it clearly offers so much more than a good standard of education.
The friendly, community-feel came through as a major attraction. People have grown up there, moved away then returned to settle with their own children because, they say, it offers a better quality of life for families. There are great things to do with kids – playgroups, Baby Sensory and Monday Monkeys at the Methodist Church for the younger ones; well-attended sports clubs and scouting and guiding groups for older children; as well as three large, well-maintained play parks. But there is plenty for adults too with classes and activities for all interests, plus good restaurants and pubs for a hassle-free evening out. There’s even talk of a new cocktail bar on the horizon.
And you couldn’t ask for more in the way of amenities. One Mumbler made so many trips to Haxby to use the shops and bank that it seemed the natural place to move to when house hunting! Everything is on your doorstep including a bank, takeaways, mini supermarkets, a post office, butcher, bakers and greengrocers, amongst other shops.
Wigginton Tennis Club warrants a mention, for operating almost a thriving community in itself. They offer tennis coaching for all ages and abilities with their LTA Accredited Coaches, on their four floodlit carpet courts. And the social club runs a number of club sessions and social events throughout the year.
It seems you Mumblers can’t get enough of the independent businesses in Haxby and Wigginton, with lots of love for The Curious Coffee Shop.
“A great independent cafe with brilliant breakfasts and totally indulgent cakes. Crayons and a kid’s menu and dog-friendly too”
And for Thora and the Prince a super independent gift shop which is, in their own words,
“Full of an eclectic array of Home Style & lifestyle items, quirky/vintage finds, pretty gifts and cards.”
Not to mention the second-hand toy shop which had a lot of mentions in our research.
When you’re in need of some safe, accessible outdoor time you don’t need to go far either. There are countless lanes and alleys for scooting and biking along or for longer walks and adventures you have easy access to great woodland, countryside and riverbanks for all the family to enjoy.
How many of you knew there is a small waterfall in Haxby (in the eyes of one Mini-Mumbler) – down by the Foss, near West Nooks? Or that there is a little brook running alongside Usher Lane that is perfect for a spot of Spring tadpoling?
So, in summary, Haxby and Wigginton is, in the eyes of the Mumbler community, an amazing place to live and bring up a family. Once you’re there it looks like you’ll be hooked, with Mumblers who are already established in the area saying that they will look to stay within the area when they want to move up the ladder “because it feels like an area for a family to grow into” thanks to the purpose-built cycle path giving safe access to Clifton Moor for bowling, the cinema, etc and the bus route into town and Monks Cross giving independence when the time comes. Others have thought of moving due to work commitments but struggled to find somewhere that ticks all the boxes.
