The magic of Christmas doesn’t need to end on 25 December this year thanks to a new ‘Twixmas’ event from Castle Howard. From 28 December to 7 January, the Courtyard Stables will be hosting a family-friendly magic show twice a day: “Magic at Castle Howard”.
The shows, featuring either WonderPhil – who some visitors may recognise from assisting Castle Howard’s Father Christmas – or Just Josh of Big Kids Entertainers, with both promising lively, fun and interactive shows to brighten the lull which follows the excitement of Christmas Day.
Castle Howard’s Farm Shop is open daily from 10am to 5.30pm, offering locally-produced fresh produce, including a butchers’ counter and fresh fruit and veg – for any post-Christmas top-ups for people avoiding busy supermarket trips.
Tickets to the Magic at Castle Howard shows can be prebooked for £5.00 per child or £6.00 on the day (subject to availability), with accompanying adults free and takes place in the Courtyard Stables (no admission fee). The show is particularly suited to under 12s and young-at-heart adults, and lasts around 45 minutes. Shows run daily at 12 noon and 2.00pm.

The enchanted forest at Stockeld Park on an evening is magical. I went last year with my then 7, 5 and 3 year olds and they all loved it. They can’t wait to go back!
We took our Brownie Pack last year and it was fab. There are different activities to do, and you pay for the ones you want. It’s also got an amazing Christmas shop, the Santa was rather amazing too.

Jack and the Beanstalk
York’s favourite family pantomime is back!
This year York Theatre Royal will be bringing you the ever popular Jack & The Beanstalk, a family favourite featuring a line-up of much loved panto characters – the big bad giant, Patricia the cow and of course, Jack himself.
They are joined by Berwick Kaler, the nation’s longest running consecutive panto dame who is widely acclaimed to be the best in the land.
The traditional family panto sees the return of Martin Barrass, who has played the dame’s on-stage ‘son’ for more than 30 years but was missing from last year’s Cinderella line-up after being seriously injured in a road traffic accident.
Now fully-recovered, he’ll join other long-time panto stars, including the villainous David Leonard and the ever-youthful Suzy Cooper.
Once again we’ve assembled the theatre’s dream team who will conjure up all that amazing magic and sparkle loved by generations of panto fans.
Berwick Kaler said: “It’s a traditional title with all the freedom and scope to turn it into the funniest version ever inflicted on an audience in search of a plot!”

The Book Of Dragons
It all began when something flew into Effie’s eye…
The next day the news was full of reports of the wonderful ‘winged lizards’ that were appearing all over the country, though the newspapers of course never called them dragons, no one believes in dragons nowadays, and they didn’t want to look silly.
