Our most magical event of the year returns again in 2020!
There is a reason why families return year after year to join us for our City Cruises York Santa Experience, it really is the most magical event on the River Ouse! And tickets for 2020 are on sale now!
Santa clearly works hard all year around and especially in December when he somehow manages to find the time to visit all of the especially well behaved boys and girls before Christmas and he tells us that the City Cruises York Santa Experience is the most unique venue that he visits in the city.
Your Santa experience begins as you are welcomed into our Grotto, cleverly hidden away underneath the beautiful Lendal Bridge. Upon entering, the Santa Experience Captain will check all of the children off the special list that we receive from Lapland. If you have any pushchairs, then you are welcome to leave these in the safety of our Reindeer Pen (they will all be away on business with Santa at this time so there will be plenty of room).
You will then be warmly greeted by Santa’s good friend Mary Christmas or Ernie the Elf, who will gladly show you to your reserved seating and distribute the magic bells.
And we can’t tell you too much more about what happens next, that would spoil the magic. But we can guarantee that Santa Claus himself will find his way aboard and the whole family will have the most wonderful time on board our Santa Experience in 2020.
Each child will be hand delivered a personalised present from Santa whilst everybody on board will enjoy refreshments, fun and surprises, making this a Christmas treat to remember.
Your ticket includes:
For adults a glass of red or white house wine or a refillable cup of tea or coffee, an apple or mince pie For kids a soft drink (Fruit Shoot or Capri Sun), a novelty biscuit
Present for each child, face-painting, colouring in sheets and a letter template to write a letter to Santa
Cruise (if river levels permit – otherwise a complementary voucher is given for a daytime sightseeing cruise at a later date that suits you)
“Fantastic Santa cruise! Nicely spaced for good social distancing, Santa was absolutely lovely and it was nicely set up that we could still get photos and kids could still have a chat to him. Lovely activity bag for the children too! Would definitely recommend!”

5th – 23rd December 2020
Meet St Nicholas and Lady Winter in their Yuletide grottos this Christmas 2020.
Our St Nicholas mirrors the Father Christmas of the past: a wandering storyteller, miracle-worker and a protector of children, bringing light, generosity, abundance and celebration to the dark months of winter. He is one of the fairy folk: the Holly King, clothed all in green and crowned in evergreens and ivy. Lady Winter, his female counterpart, is the introspective part of winter. In her grotto, experience the beauty in the barrenness of winter, which she tells us brings an opportunity to rest, to be still and to dream. She shows us the gift of silence and inner strength that can be found find in the cold and solitude winter brings.
Dress warmly, and gather, socially distanced, in the Northwood kitchen courtyard – where there will be a fire – or in the courtyard marquee 15 minutes before the start time to allow us to guide each “table” to Lady winter and onto St Nicholas grotto. Enjoy a glass of hot punch (alcoholic and non-alcoholic available), before being taken to the woodland grotto to make a wish with Lady Winter and then a short story with St Nicholas, a very experienced story teller, aimed at the whole family
Please be aware, if you are looking for a red Santa Claus this isn’t it! This Christmas event will be an atmospheric Christmas of stories, lanterns and imagination. (Children won’t receive a toy but something more meaningful and symbolic instead, a wishing stone as well as chocolate coin. )
We are running this event over only 11 days:

Thursday 17th – 23th December

CHRISTMAS in York wouldn’t be complete without a family outing to the pantomime!
York Stage producer Nik Briggs is excited to announce his company will be bringing a brand new professional staging of JACK AND THE BEANSTALK to the city this winter, billed as “a panto made in York for the people of York”.
Running from December 11 2020 to January 3 2021 for 40 performances at Theatre @41 on Monkgate, York, the 90-minute, Covid-secure show will feature a cast of eight laden with West End talent from Yorkshire.
“Our traditional family pantomime will be performed in a traverse setting, with the audience placed either side of a central stage.”
“Covid-secure safety measures will be in place and, for the first time at a York Stage show, Perspex safety screens will be placed between households and support bubbles so audiences can safely enjoy the show.”
Summing up what lies in store in Jack And The Beanstalk, Nik says: “With an exciting cast filled with West End talent, all born and bred in Yorkshire, and a creative team made up from the people who brought shows such as Shrek, The Sound Of Music and Hairspray to York, audiences can be assured of a night of true panto magic!”
“Expect glitzy sets and costumes, a show filled with singing and dancing, lots of laughs and, of course, a huge beanstalk! Audiences can book now for a giant slice of traditional Christmas fun at one of the city’s most magical, bean-sized theatres for all the family!”

Download your free Merry Mumbler Song Book here, we have thought of 5 fun ideas how you can use it to add some festive cheer this Christmas.
1.Virtual Carol Concert – Why not pick a couple of songs to learn with the kids and perform a virtual carol concert for family and friends. Get your relatives to sing along to the chorus!
2. Christmas Eve Street Performance – share some of your favourite songs with your neighbours and agree a date and time to all stand outside your front doors and put on a street carol concert. It’s a great way to see some familiar faces and spread some festive cheer, especially for those who may be living alone.
3. Singing with actions – Many Christmas songs can be sung with actions but why not have a go at making up some of your own! Before singing the 12 days of Christmas write on a piece of paper each of the 12 lines of the song, fold up and put in a jar. Everyone takes turns to draw from the jar until it is empty. When singing the song when it is your line you have to do a funny action to represent the line of the song, so for 3 French hens you might flap your arms and bob your head like a chicken! The best part about this activity is no one knows who has which line and what they are going to do! Also works well for the street performance above, hand out a different line to each participating neighbour.
4. Have fun dressing up – Put on some festive gear and choose a song to re-enact with your children as you all sing the lyrics. Songs such as ‘When Santa got stuck up the chimney’ work great for this, play the roles of Santa, Rudolf and cheeky elves and have fun trying to get Santa out the chimney / laundry basket / a cardboard box!
5. Host a Christmas Carol Quiz! – once you’ve had fun learning the all the songs why not have a go at our Christmas Carol Quiz! Download the quiz sheet and play at home or online with friends.
