It might feel like a long time since you visited York city centre, so we thought we’d share a few ideas of things to do with the kids and some brilliant places families can enjoy a well-deserved treat!
A gentle wander through the beautiful streets of York is always a great way to take in all the history and beautiful buildings you might normally rush past. But if you want to throw in some extra entertainment we’ve got some great ideas for your next visit. Children’s legs never seem to get so tired when there is something to hunt for or spot along the way. Why not try one of these brilliant trails around York.
York Cat Trail
Have fun wandering the street of York, looking up to buildings you might have not noticed before to find all 22 cats. This walk is bound to keep the children entertained! You can download the Cat Trail map from York Lucky Cats website.

Have fun on the Selfie Trail
Follow this trail from Visit York around York’s most iconic photo spots and take selfies at each one. After you’ve enjoyed your walk around York and got a fabulous set of family photos, why not make a collage of all the photos as a Lockdown memory!

Luxury Ice Cream Company LICC
LICC is excited to be back in business and will be operating daily from 10am-6pm. They are adhering to strict social distancing guidelines by only allowing 2 people in the shop at a time, but will make exceptions for small babies & children of course.
Daily specials and deals are on their Instagram stories so stay tuned! They are serving ice cream, hot & cold takeaway drinks, ice cream sandwiches, milkshakes & takeaway tubs/pots. Gift vouchers are also available for purchase. With over 400 flavours and 24 on display every day, there is something for everyone to indulge in!

Scoops started off as a cupboard which they transformed 17 years ago into what it is now. They have operated it since day one so it is a family business. They offer some exotic flavours as well as the ever-popular and always carry sorbets for vegans and those with various allergies plus some gelatos for the healthier option. We also offer tea coffee, hot choc, slush, fresh milkshakes, frappes and cold drinks.
They encourage social distancing, have hand sanitiser in place for themselves and customers and practise a rigorous cleaning regime at all times. The Coppergate Centre has plenty of safe space for children to play including an artificial grass area with seating.

Woody’s Ice Cream Van
Woody’s Ice Cream is a traditional soft scoop ice cream kart, based in King’s Square at the top of the Shambles.
Their ice cream is full of flavour and made in Yorkshire, supporting small local businesses.

Dark Horse Espresso Bar
A small family run cafe that operates from their converted horsebox, located in the Shambles Market, York. They have tried to encompass their love of York and Sydney, their two homes and bring all of their experiences from within these two beautiful Cities to this little corner of York.
They offer a family-friendly menu that does not compromise on quality, with lots of homemade cakes and savouries available to take away. They pride themselves on their coffee and have spent over a decade perfecting their barista skills and they are truly passionate about their product. They also offer a Gourmet Toastie menu and are very lucky to be able to serve these on Bluebird Bakery’s Sourdough bread.
They are currently only offering a takeaway service due to Covid-19 but hope to be able to resume normal service soon, which will mean the return of their seating and kids corner – an area for children to draw, play and sit whilst parents enjoy their coffee!

Mannions are running a takeaway menu of classic dishes for you to enjoy at home or outside. To order you just need to call the York branch on 01904 631030, 30 minutes before you want to collect – state any allergies or dietary requirements when ordering.
They also have a great selection of deli products, beers, wines, seasonal fruit & vegetables, homemade bread & cooked meats & salamis. They operate within the government guidelines on social distancing & contactless payments only. They do NOT operate a delivery service.
Bits & bobs platter (selection of meats, cheese, pickles and bread from the deli) for £8.50 per person and a range of sandwiches including slow-cooked pork belly for £6.50 and breakfast sandwiches from £5.

Visit Dean’s Park
Dean’s Park to the north side of York Minster is the perfect place to relax and enjoy stunning views of York Minster. Find out more information about Dean’s Park here.
If you have young children, there is plenty you can enjoy spotting and counting on a walk around the Minster. From stained glass windows to gargoyles, you’ll be amazed at what you see when you take the time to enjoy it.
Visit York Museum Gardens
Now open 7 days a week from 10.30am – 6pm, not only are the Museum Gardens beautiful, as they are located in the city centre they make the perfect spot for a picnic or an ice cream!
There are social distancing guidelines in place in the Gardens to ensure it is a safe and welcoming place. For more information on the gardens, including how to donate so support the care of the gardens is available here. Please note The Yorkshire Museum remains closed.
Visit Rowntree Park
Just a short walk from the city centre, this huge 30-acre park offers plenty of space to stroll with the buggy or let your children run free.
Duck food and ’King of the Birds’ trail sheers are available for ‘none contact’ pick up near a park gate (£1 each).
Please note certain areas and facilities are closed such as the cafe and play parks. The car park is currently closed, but the park is easily accessible via walking or cycling.
Useful information about safely enjoying York city centre
The City of York Council has been working hard to prepare for the re-opening of York so that we can all enjoy our beautiful city safely.
Pedestrian zones will be extended to support local businesses and to provide residents with more space to social distance.
New safety and guidance street signs/floor stickers and markings are placed across the city centre for pedestrians.
Signage is placed on key areas on footpath and roads to provide guidance on which routes are one way, where to keep left and where to social distance.
