At DIG you can discover exciting artefacts from 2000 years of York’s history. It is a unique hands-on archaeological adventure. The tours last for one hour and there are four special indoor excavation pits to explore.
Your visit also includes a talk from an archaeologist and the chance to see some real artefacts.

Travel back in time to 10th century York, to experience what it was like living in the city. The sights, sounds and even the smells of the Viking Age are brought vividly back to life as you journey back 1,000 years.

The Mansion House in York is the oldest purpose-built home for a Lord Mayor in the country. Beyond the grandeur of the impressive exterior of the house, lies a home that was built for entertaining royalty.
You can also enjoy a fully functional, recreated 18th-century kitchen. It shares its basement home with the butler’s pantry and meat stores. A visit is like stepping back in time.

“Just wanted to recommend the Mansion House for entertainment value, if anyone’s run out of holiday ideas! Half price if you’re a York resident, loads to see, a trail for younger kids, dressing up, crafts, brass rubbings and of course a mummified cat in a cupboard. Rainbows are situated in the heart of York, just minutes from York Minster and around the corner from York Art Gallery. They provide a fun and relaxing environment for people of all ages to come and express their creativity.
They have a vast selection of pottery and all the stamps, stencils, sponges and paints you need to help you and your children get creative. You simply select the item you would like to paint, think of a design and get painting. There are plenty of samples and books if you need some inspiration. All paints are water-based and non-toxic.

👨👧 What ages is it suitable for? Any age. Even if your children are too young to paint, you can create a keepsake with a print of their foot or hand.
⏰ How long should I spend there? On average about one and a half to two hours but it can take longer. Younger children tend to take less time than older ones. You are welcome to stay as long as you like.
💰 How much is it? Ceramic items start from £10.00. Your finished item will then be ready to collect in 1 week after it has been glazed and fired. Your item can be posted to held longer if you are visiting York. You can also paint in acrylics so you can take your item away the same day.

York Castle Museum is brilliant for families as there is so much to explore. Kirkgate is a Victorian street that really brings history to life. You can visit York Castle Prison, as the museum building were once a Georgian Prison – watch out for the most notorious inmate of all, Dick Turpin!
Explore ‘1914: When the World Changed Forever’ an exhibition which tells the fascinating and moving stories of the Yorkshire people who lived and died during the war they said would end all wars. You can then jump to the swinging Sixties exhibition which recreates the spirit of this exciting decade. There is a lot to explore and discover at York Castle Museum.

It’s impossible to miss the imposing York Minster on a visit to York, and walking around the outside to admire stained glass windows and intricate details has to be on your must-see list. Exploring the inside of York Minster is equally as breathtaking.
It is one of Europe’s most magnificent cathedrals and inside you will be able to learn about its Roman roots and its role in Viking history.

Day trips and short breaks can start to get expensive, so if you are looking for some free activities to keep everyone entertained, we’ve listed the very best free things to do in York city centre with kids. You can enjoy a full day out in York and not spend a penny!
The National Railway Museum is a Mumbler favourite and a good option on a rainy day. It is a vast museum that kids will love exploring! It’s filled with locomotives, has indoor and outdoor play areas, model railways and much more!

“We took our son who’s 20 months 2 weeks ago and he loved it! The model train set is fab and the little railway outside was a hit with my son. There’s also a great little play area inside.”

Walking around York City Walls gives you the opportunity to see York from a different and unique perspective. This circular walk is about 2 miles in total and takes around 2 hours to do the whole thing. The walls are open to walk on from about 8.00 am to dusk daily, except in conditions when repairs/maintenance, snow or ice may make them dangerous.
There are a lot of steps and you have to enter and exit the walls at various Bars, so they are not really pushchair friendly. For more information see the York Walls website.

The York Museum Gardens are botanical gardens situated in the heart of York and offer an oasis of tranquillity. They cover an area of 10 acres of the former grounds of St Mary’s Abbey which are fun to explore.
There is often an ice cream van and coffee van available for refreshments and in fair weather, there is often a Bird of Prey display.
Children might enjoy taking part in the Squirrel Trail which provides a good opportunity to explore the whole gardens.
The Museum Gardens also make the perfect spot for a family picnic in fine weather.
There are over 20 cat statues hiding on many historic buildings around York. The Cat Trail gives you a brilliant opportunity to walk around York and look up at buildings you might have missed, in your quest to find all the cats. You can download and print the Cat Trail here.

If you fancy a day out with the kids near York, there’s a brilliant range of activities and fun to be had just outside of the city centre. From farms and wildlife parks to soft play and treetop climbing, there is something for everyone. We’ve listed some of the York Mumbler community favourite activities beyond the city walls below.
Based at Askham Bryan College, York the park is open at weekends and school holidays. There is an indoor exhibit with freshwater turtles, tropical fish, reptiles and nocturnal animals. The rest of the animals are outside and include meerkats, otters lemurs, wallabies and raccoon dogs. There is also a large aviary section, farm animals and tortoise section.
If all those animals weren’t enough, there is also a cafe, a large play area and plenty of picnic tables.

“I would just like to recommend Askham Bryan Wildlife Park. It is really nice to go somewhere that you don’t have to travel too far out of town and it’s not too big. There is quite a lot outside and good for picnic. It is very accessible too if you have a push chair. We had a great time”

With extensive gardens and grounds, plenty of picnic spots, a walled garden restaurant and a smaller cafe offering takeaways there is plenty to do at Beningbrough for the day.
There is a wilderness play area with lots of play equipment and a den building area. Inside the house, there are many galleries displaying exhibitions of contemporary and historic art.

“You can have a walk around the walled gardens, the playground is great for young(ish) children, and there’s a den building area. There’s plenty of places for a good game of hide and seek. They have a fish pond with very friendly fish as well.”

Better York Leisure Centre is part of the York Stadium Leisure Complex located in Monks Cross, Huntington, York. The gym overlooks the LNER Stadium pitch and offers a range of classes. The swimming area offers a 6 lane, 25-metre pool, plus a shallow learner and toddlers splash pool.
The Clip N Climb arena is a colourful and adventurous range of climbing walls, offering a fun experience in a safe and supervised environment.

“Yesterday I took my girls to Clip ‘N Climb at York Leisure Centre. We had so much fun! You get a 10 min safety briefing and 50 mins climbing. We’d highly recommend it and can’t wait to go back!”

Murton Park is an open-air museum experience like no other! It is a Living Museum with a railway, animals, playground and much more!
Set in 16 acres of parkland, which includes a Viking village and Roman Fort, an outdoor museum with a collection of tractors and a cafe, you won’t be short of things to see and do.

“There’s a lovely outdoor play area with a huge sandpit and a new mud kitchen. They also have an indoor roleplay area too. You honestly can’t go wrong as the tickets you buy are valid for a year”

Spilmans Farm is just 20 miles from York in Thirsk and is spread across 15 acres, so there is plenty of space for everyone.
It’s not just strawberries though – you can pick gooseberries, raspberries, blackberries, potatoes and sunflowers between June – September at various different times. Check out the Spilmans website to see what’s available for picking when you plan to visit and to pre-book your entrance.

The Web Adventure Park in York has a large indoor play area called Creepy Crawlies, a large outdoor adventure park with a water play area, animal zone and more! The animal zone has goats, shetland ponies, rabbits, sheep, pigs and more!
The water play area is the perfect place to cool down, splash and paddle with lots of fun things to play with.

York FootGolf is a great outdoor activity for the whole family. Set on a 17-acre golf course, FootGolf is played by kicking normal size footballs into large golf holes using the same scoring system as crazy golf.
You don’t need any experience or equipment is needed to play and it’s suitable for all ages and abilities.

“We had such an amazing day at York FootGolf. I am not a massive fan of either football or golf to be fair, but we enjoyed the day so much. I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a day of fun with their family in the lovely outdoors!”

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle or are looking for something off the beaten track, we’ve discovered these hidden gems in York…and we thought we’d better not keep them all for ourselves! They are perfect if you fancy something a bit more chilled out and relaxed, or good if you are looking for a trip out that suits the kids and grandparents.
Bedern Hall really is one of York’s true hidden gems as it’s tucked away behind the busy Goodramgate. You can explore over 700 years of history in this hidden medieval hall.
Children can join Stanley the Squirrel on the activity trail and a visit to the courtyard cafe and covered garden terrace provides peace and tranquillity.

Discover England’s oldest living convent and over 300 years of history at The Bar Covent. Established in great secrecy during the reformation as a convent and the first school for girls in York.
Now a Living Heritage Centre, the interactive exhibition tells you the rich and fascinating story of the convent. You can also enjoy a visit to the café whilst you are there and soak up the peaceful surroundings.

Holgate Windmill, York’s last surviving windmill and the oldest 5-sailed windmill in the country is now fully restored and producing traditional stone-ground flour.

⏰ How long should we spend there? Whilst you can’t currently go up the windmill, the Mill Shop is open every Saturday and the windmill is an impressive sight! We recommend walking up to the Windmill before or after a visit to West Bank Park in Holgate (only a 5-10 minute walk away).

York Park & Ride services are a hassle-free way to get into the city without having to worry about finding a parking space – with the added bonus of a trip on a bus for younger kids! There are six Park & Ride sites offering secure parking and regular buses to/from the city centre. Buses run every 10-15 minutes throughout the day.
