You’ve probably heard of Hypnobirthing what with all the coverage it’s been getting in the media lately. Here are some tips to help you decide what antenatal course is best for you. How best to prepare for your labour & birth, from Inner Wisdom Doula Emma Yates-Butler.
1) Focus on the positives
In hypnobirthing classes we advise that it’s really important to surround yourself with positive birth stories. Birth can be enjoyable and empowering. I tell my women that I want them to have an awesome birth. Developing a positive mindset for birth comes with the knowledge that women’s bodies were made to give birth. It is not the go with the flow mentality which many people seem to have these days…” baby’s gotta come out whatever, so I’m just going to go with the flow”. That’s just winging it! Being prepared physically, mentally, emotionally and having some knowledge equals true confidence and self-belief.
This is your time, and I also believe in pregnancy you need give yourself permission to chill. You’ll find a relaxed approach in my hypnobirthing classes. After all our over arching aim is learning to relax down and stay calm through self-hypnosis. It’s about developing your inner resources so you are in tune with your body and instincts. Learning how to promote your birthing hormones & build your own bank of endorphins (feel good hormones) so that you have the best chance of an easier straightforward time in labour.
3) Body-Mind connection
Hypnobirthing is different from other types of antenatal classes because it works on the subconcious mind. You may be feeling some fear or anxiety around labour, e.g. fear of loss of control, fear of pain, fear of the maternity system, fear arising from you hearing about your friends traumatic birth experience. The hypnobirthing scripts work to help you reduce and let go of these fears, using the mind-body connection. The subconcious is where 95% of our brain activity happens and labour is controlled by the subconcious mind.
4) Do you understand how much choice and control you have over how your birth goes on the day?
In hypnobirthing we also teach you how to navigate the medical system & know how to find out when an intervention is really needed. To have the best possible experience on the day, you need to know what your rights and choices are within the maternity system. Our maternity system is very complicated these days, rife with the mindset that birth is risky and needs managing and this impacts the women giving birth. As a doula I can help you to understand how you can navigate your way through this, so you feel fulfilled by your birth experience whilst you keep everybody safe, healthy and happy. You can write in your birth plan the words you want to be used or not used, and what it is you’re after; you can even ask staff to leave if you are not happy with them. If someone in your birth room is having a negative impact and you don’t like the way it is influencing you, and you are feeling pressurised, that’s going to affect how quick and how comfortable your labour is going to be. Conversley, if you’re not aware of the hospital’s approach to labour, chances are you’ll just go along with what’s offered without discussion. When you are in labour you are incredibly vulnerable and you’re incredibly sensitive to what’s going on around you. Hypnobirthing courses are there to arm up you and your birth partner, to become aware of what our system is like and to be ready to deal with this.
There’s a massive increase in normal birth statistics with hypnobirthing the chance of having a drug-free birth is so much higher, it’s about 20% higher.
Even where birth takes a different course and doesn’t go to plan, hypnobirthing can still mean you stay positive about your birth.
You’re likely to feel positive about your birth if: you’re well supported, listened to and have the opportunity to make your own choices based on knowledge, confidence and trust you are able to stay calm using your hypnobirthing methods, tools and techniques right the way through the birth, however this happens.
