York Castle Museum

Visit the award-winning York Castle Museum and immerse yourself in over 400 years of York’s past! Discover hundreds of years of York’s social history in one place. You can marvel at period room sets and experience the sights and sounds of a Victorian street recreated from original Yorkshire buildings, including shops, workshops and a school room.

You can also discover more about the Museum’s darker history as a former prison, where the infamous highwayman, Dick Turpin, was once held. Step back in time into the prison cells and find out what life would have been like for those who spent time here.

Our galleries hold thousands of historic objects that bring the past to life through fascinating displays and immersive experiences.

Entry is free to York resident children aged 16 and under.
