There’s over 100 attractions to explore and enjoy, for FREE!!! (with a valid York Card or Student ID)
The Residents weekend is organised by Make It York and sponsored by Grand Central, it allows you the chance to be a tourist for the weekend – for free! Now in its 24th year, this annual festival is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for the warm welcome you give to York’s visitors.
As well as venues and attractions to visit, there are offers in shops and restaurants to enjoy too.
Pre-booking is required at some venues and that some venues have limited free tickets and operate on a first come, first served basis.
The majority of activities on offer during the festival are family friendly and there’s so many to choose! (See the Visit York Website for the full list of events and activities running over the weekend)

City Cruises York | Sat 26 Jan & Sun 27 Jan | 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm (departure times) Sailing from King’s Staith or Lendal Bridge A 30 minute cruise along the Ouse, always a VERY popular one!
DIG: An archaeological Adventure | Sat 26 Jan & Sun 27 Jan | 10am – 5pm (4pm is last admissions) St Saviour’s Church, St Saviourgate, YO1 8NN DIG: An Archaeological Adventure gives kids the chance to become trainee ‘diggers’ and discover the most exciting artefacts from 2000 years of York’s history in our fun, mess-free synthetic mud pits!

Available on a first served basis. Walk-Ins Only. Limited Spaces. Energi Trampoline Socks must be worn and can be purchased for £1.00 on the night.
Explore York Libraries and Archives | Sat 26 Jan 10am – 4pm York Explore Library, Library Square, Museum Street, York, YO1 7DS Map Attack returns to York Explore! Join us as we attempt to recreate old York from Lego and Duplo using some of our historic archive maps and plans as inspiration. This event is for all ages. Free drop- in. There will also be a 4m Lego Train! A central attraction at the event will be a four-metre long train made out of LEGO.® Created by renowned LEGO® architect, Brickthis, aka Steve Mayes, the replica Grand Central Adelante train will take pride of place at York Explore during the weekend. Made from approximately 30,000 bricks, the Adelante model is four metres long and 30 centimetres high – a must see for train and LEGO® fans alike!!!!
Friends of York Cemetary | Sun 27 Jan | 10am – 4pm 30 Cemetery Rd, York YO10 5AJ Events will be: History and Garden Walks, Catacomb Tours, Grave searches, Self-Guided Walks, Bird recognition with the RSPB, Make a bird feeder from cones, seed and lard, ideal for children… Friends stall. Free tea/coffee and cake.
JORVIK Viking Centre | Sat 26 Jan & Sun 27 Jan | 1pm onwards Coppergate, YO1 9WT Always a very popular attraction on residents weekend!!
National Centre for Early Music | Sat 26 Jan 11am – 12:30, 2pm – 3:30pm & Sun 27 Jan 11am, 1pm & 3pm St Margaret’s Church, Walmgate, York, YO1 9TL Saturday: Gamelan Gong Come and play Gamelan music, which originates from Indonesia and is played on a stunning array of handcrafted bronze gongs and chimes. 11.00-12.30 suitable for young people aged 7+ (accompanied by adults) and 14.00-15.30 suitable for adults. Sunday: Lullaby: Sonic Cradle Join South Asian arts group Manasamitra, to share your lullabies and childhood stories at their Lullaby Booth which will collect songs and stories. York Castle Museum | Sat 26 Jan & Sun 27 Jan | 9:30am – 5pm Eye of York, YO1 9RY FREE ENTRY. Visit this award winning museum where you can explore over 400 years of York’s past in one place. Famous for its Victorian street, Kirkgate, and collections of costumes, textiles, military and social history.
York’s Chocolate Story | Sat 26 Jan & Sun 27 Jan | 9am – 5pm Kings Square, York YO1 7LD Join us for five free tours of the attraction at 9am, 9:15am, 9:30am, 9:45am and 10am on both Saturday and Sunday. There will also be 1/3 off additional admissions for York residents throughout the whole weekend.
York Minster Tower Trips | Sat 26 Jan 9:30am – 3:30pm & Sun 27 Jan 1:15pm – 3:30pm Deangate, York YO1 7HH Experience unbeatable, panoramic views of York from the highest point in the city- York Minster’s Central Tower (ages 8+, see website for T&Cs). Explore the cathedral’s 2000 year history and (on Saturdays only) enjoy family friendly activities in the Chapter House. Pre-booking is not required. Tower Trips are dependent on weather so can only be booked in person from Saturday morning but proved popular last year so please come early to avoid disappointment.

Yorktour | Sat 26 Jan & Sun 27 Jan | 2pm Exhibition Square York You live in York- but how well do you really know it? This 90 minute walking tour will open your eyes to things you may have walked past a thousand times but never really seen before! No pre-booking required- please assemble in front of the fountain in Exhibition Square at 2pm. The walk lasts approximately 90 minutes.
York Card / Student Card
Residents need to show a valid York Card or York Student ID card to be able to access all that is on offer for residents over the weekend. YorkCards cost £6 for adults and are free for under 18’s. They are available from Explore York Libraries (Click HERE to find your nearest library and get residents festival ready!). The YorkCard also entitles you to free or discounted entry to a range of leisure facilities and attractions in York throughout the year, so keep hold of it after the residents weekend!
