The Residents weekend is organised by Make It York and sponsored by Grand Central, it allows you the chance to be a tourist for the weekend – for free! Now in its 24th year, this annual festival is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for the warm welcome you give to York’s visitors.
As well as venues and attractions to visit, there are offers in shops and restaurants to enjoy too.
Pre-booking is required at some venues and that some venues have limited free tickets and operate on a first come, first served basis.
The majority of activities on offer during the festival are family friendly and there’s so many to choose! (See the Visit York Website for the full list of events and activities running over the weekend)

Map Attack returns to York Explore! Join us as we attempt to recreate old York from Lego and Duplo using some of our historic archive maps and plans as inspiration. This event is for all ages. Free drop- in.
There will also be a 4m Lego Train!
A central attraction at the event will be a four-metre long train made out of LEGO.® Created by renowned LEGO® architect, Brickthis, aka Steve Mayes, the replica Grand Central Adelante train will take pride of place at York Explore during the weekend. Made from approximately 30,000 bricks, the Adelante model is four metres long and 30 centimetres high – a must see for train and LEGO® fans alike!!!!

Sunday: Lullaby: Sonic Cradle
Join South Asian arts group Manasamitra, to share your lullabies and childhood stories at their Lullaby Booth which will collect songs and stories. Suitable for families and individuals.

Pre-booking is not required. Tower Trips are dependent on weather so can only be booked in person from Saturday morning but proved popular last year so please come early to avoid disappointment.

You live in York- but how well do you really know it? This 90 minute walking tour will open your eyes to things you may have walked past a thousand times but never really seen before!
No pre-booking required- please assemble in front of the fountain in Exhibition Square at 2pm. The walk lasts approximately 90 minutes.
York Card / Student Card
Residents need to show a valid York Card or York Student ID card to be able to access all that is on offer for residents over the weekend. YorkCards cost £6 for adults and are free for under 18’s. They are available from Explore York Libraries (Click HERE to find your nearest library and get residents festival ready!). The YorkCard also entitles you to free or discounted entry to a range of leisure facilities and attractions in York throughout the year, so keep hold of it after the residents weekend!
