We all need help at this time in our lives, it’s entirely unrealistic to think we can raise our babies alone – even if there are no complications or bumps in the road (and when is that ever the case?!) so we’ve got details of some amazing people and organisations who will be able to help you, whatever it is you are handling with your new baby.
FEELING STRESSED, ANXIOUS OR OVERWHELMED?
Experiencing a difficult pregnancy, birth or postpartum, or witnessing a distressing event, can have a profound impact on a person’s emotions and well-being. It is not uncommon for parents to struggle with strong and adverse emotions that resurface when recalling specific events. These emotions may include anxiety, fear, sadness, anger, or a combination of these feelings and may continue to affect your day-to-day life, and that of your loved ones, even months or years later.
TBR 3-step rewind is an incredible technique that takes place over 3 sessions and can be done in-person or by video call. Through guided relaxation, and using specialist training in trauma recovery, you will be supported in processing any distressing memories in a way that leaves you able to recall the memory, without any heightened emotions; feeling calm, confident and in control.
“I cannot recommend Mel enough! After a previous birth trauma, Mel worked closely with me to decrease the anxiety around my upcoming birth… her help and guidance has been incredible… I welcomed our new baby with disbelief at how calm and confident I felt about it all” (KT)
The fee for the three sessions is £195.00.

Home-Start York provide support for York families with children under 5.
Our staff provide training to a team of volunteers who visit a family every week for 2-3 hours, for as long as a parent needs it. Home-Start support can be for few weeks up to a year and is provided free from judgment.
Pregnant women can benefit from Home-Start support. From 30 weeks pregnant, women can be referred by their midwife or health visitor to receive, one to one support in their own home. Each week a volunteer will visit and help emotionally and practically prepare for babies’ arrival and the first few months postnatally.
We also hold weekly groups for new parents of 0-2’s to get together and make friends, groups are held in a confidential, warm, and friendly environment and run by our Family Support Coordinators who are on hand to provide guidance and support for new parents in the first steps to parenthood.

A local Charity supporting children with Down Syndrome and their families.
Supporting families who have a child with Down’s Syndrome is at the heart what we do.
We believe that parents are pivotal to their child’s development. That’s why we work closely with parents and carers to offer advice, support and reassurance – and to ensure they are adequately equipped to help their child reach their full potential.
Shine21 supports families by providing sessions on learning Makaton; loaning resources; sharing knowledge; and signposting professional support.
The charity, which was established in 2020, is also passionate about raising awareness of Down’s Syndrome and working closely with local services and professionals to improve the care our children receive.

We are a group of individuals and organisations that work together to improve maternity care for birthing people and their families. The partnerships are made up of birthing people, healthcare professionals, and representatives from local organisations and charities. Together, we aim to ensure that the voices of women, birthing individuals and their families are heard and acted upon in the planning, design, and delivery of maternity care.
Overall, MNVPs play a crucial role in improving the quality and safety of maternity care in local communities. We provide a platform for birthing people and their families to have their voices heard and help to ensure that maternity services are designed and delivered in a way that meets their needs and preferences. If you are pregnant or planning to have a baby, you may want to consider getting involved to help shape the future of maternity care in your area.
Whether it’s to share your experience or volunteer to be part of our MNVP we’d love to hear from you at yorkdistrictmvp@gmail.com, or come to one of our meetings, held quarterly and open to all.
York NCT Nappy Library is a not for profit washable (cloth) nappy lending service. The service is run by volunteers from York branch NCT. We provide advice and lend washable nappies for trial.
“I’m currently borrowing some reusable nappies from the York NCT Nappy Library and would definitely recommend them as a service to other new mums thinking of using them but not quite sure where to start. From my research, the land of cloth nappies is a complete mine-field in terms of different brands and types, so the nappy library is a great way to try a few without breaking the bank. It’s a free service and you get to borrow a few types and brands for a whole month. They provide you with a wet bag, liners and a couple of vest extenders too to help you get started. It’s been fab for me in helping to find out which ones best suit our family. “
