From the creator of JORVIK Viking Centre comes a hands-on archaeological adventure giving kids the chance to become trainee ‘diggers’ and discover the most exciting artefacts from 2000 years of York’s history!
“One of the best family days out. No other experience gets you as close to the excitement of archaeological discovery.” The One Show’s Dan Snow
Our four excavation pits are filled with Roman, Viking, medieval and VIctorian finds – so grab a trowel, dig up the clues and discover how people lived in the past! Once you’ve unearthed these exciting discoveries, an archaeologist is on hand to help you examine real life archaeological finds like animal bones, pieces of Roman house tiles and even a Viking-Age poo! Don’t worry, the excavation pits are filled with synthetic, mess-free mud, so there’s no need to bring a change of clothes.
“We went to DIG today for York Residents festival and I just wanted to say how nice it was for littles! There is an under 5’s little play area upstairs, which is tiny but really fun, with a tent, books, toys, dress up, a digging area, a wheelbarrow etc. There was a gate on it so you can make sure tiny tots stay in the area. Downstairs there were some nice little activity tables and for under 3’s it was free. The loos were good with changing facilities. There’s a lift and a small gift shop.”

York Army Museum is home to the collections of the Royal Dragoon Guards and the Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire. Through these we tell the story of the British Army and its importance for Yorkshire in the last 300 years. Following a recent refurbishment, York Army Museum is now open as an exciting and engaging visitor attraction, with something to offer for all ages.
“We visited the museum in Feb half term with a 5 year old and 18 month old. They had extra activities on for the little ones (sword making and crafts) and had lots of other interactive parts too, plenty of opportunities for dressing up!”

York Minster is a fantastic destination for family days out in York with loads of things to see and do. We have lots of activities, events and learning resources to enjoy in the Minster to make the most of your family’s visit. Visit the website for free family-friendly trails before you visit and get the most from your trip to York Minster.
“I just want to recommend York Minster as a free trip out with little ones. We’ve just been this morning and it was marvellous. Our little girl was given a little explorers back pack that you hand back in on your way out containing binoculars, a magnifying glass, torch, mirrors, colouring pencils and note pad as well as several activity cards with things to look out for, maps and information. In addition to all that there were lots of activities in the undercroft including building arches and fancy dress as well as a separate area with books, puppets and building blocks. The toilet and changing facilities are also very good. It really was excellent and is free for york residents, you only need to show proof of address and don’t need to have purchased a York card.”

“York Minster! As a York resident you get free entry (take some proof like a york library card if you have got one) and ask for one of their little backpacks (free to borrow) to explore with. They have torch, map, magnifying glass etc to see all the nooks and crannies!! Check the website to be on the safe side there isn’t a special service on. Kx”
