There are plenty of child and family friendly cafes in York which really do welcome children and families so I’ve compiled a list of them here.They’re not exclusively for families and we know that different families are looking for different things, so we’ve set 5 criteria of ‘family friendliness’ including nappy change facilities, pram space, high chair availability, kids menus and kids activities. Look out for the ‘Mumbler approved’ sticker in the window to know they’ve qualified for at least 3 of the 5 child friendly criteria.
We have also listed where is dog friendly as well as the opening hours and address. We hope this all makes it easier for you to eat out with your family in York.
The award-winning farm shop and café specialises in locally grown produce, including fruits, vegetables, and rare breed meat. Their in-house bakery provides homemade scones, cakes & traybakes for the shop and the café, with their chefs providing a range of delicious meals, sandwiches and seasonal specialties for the café.
The Balloon Tree is a great day out for all of the family – their Pick Your Own seasonal runs throughout the Summer, giving you the opportunity to hunt for the biggest strawberries, raspberries, and even pumpkins in the October season! Don’t forget you can even come and find your perfect locally sourced Christmas Tree in December.
Entertain the children in the play area, situated in the securely fenced café garden, so you can enjoy a cup of coffee & homemade cake, whilst they burn off some energy.
Their delicatessen counter serves a wide range of sausage rolls, quiches and sandwiches – all from local businesses. They even have a hot counter where you can grab a warm luxury black pudding sausage roll, or if you’re really hungry a hot pork sandwich with apple sauce, stuffing and crackling!

Plush Café is the most instagrammable café in York!
This independent family-run business offers a delicious brunch and lunch menu (with great vegan and gluten-free options!), as well as coffee, tea, cakes, ice-cream, freakshakes and more for both sit in and takeaway.
They have 3 themed dining rooms – the gorgeous Garden Room with flowers all over the walls and swings for seats, the luxurious Bohemian Room full of floor cushions and low tables, and the eccentric Neon Room, which is also dog friendly.
