Baby Loss Awareness Week is held annually from 9 to 15 October. It is an opportunity to bring people together and give anyone touched by pregnancy and baby loss a safe and supportive space to share their experiences and feel that they are not alone.
The aims of Baby Loss Awareness Week is to:
- Support Bereaved Families and Commemorate Babies’ Lives
- Raise awareness around Pregnancy and Baby Loss
- Drive Change and Improvements in care and support
If you or anyone you know has been affected by pregnancy or baby loss, there is support available. Reflect offers free one-to-one support for men and women in York. For more information see their website. www.reflectsupport.co.uk.
Wave of Light – 15 October, 7pm
Every year the week ends with the Wave of Light on 15 October, a moment which commemorates all the much-loved and much-missed babies. For some this is a private moment of reflection, while others share photos or videos of their candles on social media to connect with others taking part.
To join the virtual Wave of Light, take a photo of your candle and post it to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using #WaveOfLight at 7pm local time.
There is also a ‘Light a Candle’ event in Harrogate on Tuesday 10th October at St Peters Church.
Wherever you do this, you will be joining a global ‘Wave of Light’ in memory of all the babies who lit up our lives for such a short time.
York Hospital
Throughout the week, York Hospital will be lit pink and blue, aiming to highlight the emotional impact of pregnancy and baby loss.
Bev Shelley, Maternity Bereavement Midwife said: “We hope turning the hospital pink and blue will spark conversations about baby loss and give local bereaved parents and families an opportunity to talk about their precious babies.”
Anyone affected by baby loss is invited to join us and light a candle in memory of their baby at one of two chapel services:
12.30pm – 1.30pm, Tuesday 10 Oct, York Hospital
1pm – 2pm, Thursday 12 Oct, Scarborough Hospital
