The majority of collections in York, for both household waste and recycling will take place the day after their normal collection date.
However, to enable crews to take leave over the holiday season, there will be changes to some collection dates.
The most significant changes are collections due on Christmas Day (Monday 25 December), which will be collected two days before on Saturday 23 December. The last recycling collection for these households will be Monday 11 December (before Christmas) and then Monday 8 January (after Christmas).
Household waste for households due on Friday 29 December will take place the day after, but their last recycling collection for these households will be Friday 15 December (before Christmas) and Friday 12 January (after Christmas).
Household waste for households due on Friday 5 January will take place the day after, but their last recycling collection for these households will be Friday 22 December (before Christmas) and Friday 19 January (after Christmas).
Recycling for around 2,000 hard to reach households in the city centre is collected by St Nicks, and these households are urged to check their website for any date changes: https://www.stnicks.org.uk
To look up collection days visit: City of York Council here.
It’s important that bins or boxes are presented by 7am on the day of collections, but no earlier than 7pm the evening before.
Hazel Court HWRC and Towthorpe/Strensall HWRC are open every day, except:
There are also many recycling sites (bring banks) across the city, typically located at some supermarkets. To find these sites, visit: https://www.recyclenow.com/recycling-locator
Real Christmas trees and wreaths can be taken to recycling sites at Hazel Court HWRC or Towthorpe/Strensall HWRC.
Residents are advised to chop up their Christmas tree and wreaths (remove all decorations, bows and ribbons) and place them in the garden waste bin. These will be taken away when garden waste collections resume again in March/April 2024.
Extra festive recycling will be collected too including greeting cards, paper, wrapping paper (non-foil), cardboard (please break down or fold), plastic bottles, tins or glass.
All residents need to do is correctly sort them and place them in separate untied clear bags or open boxes of a similar size to a recycling box and put out with their recycling, or simply take them to a recycling site.
Full details of how to present extra items can be found here including what to do if you have more items than fit inside each recycling box: www.york.gov.uk/ExcessAndAdditionalRecycling.
