Become an archaeologist for the day
Take the kids to DIG: An Archaeological Adventure this Easter! Children can grab a trowel and get stuck into replica trenches (with synthetic soil so you won’t get dirty!), exploring finds from 2000 years of York’s history.
The four special indoor excavation pits, are all based on real-life digs in the city and filled with replica Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian finds – children can grab a trowel and explore how people lived in these times!
The DIG experience also includes a talk from an archaeologist so you and the kids can get up close with real archaeological artefacts. Plus, it’s a brilliant chance for the little ones to ask any of their burning questions about archaeology.
Make sure you explore the DIG garden when you visit this Spring! What plants and insects can you spot?
Discover the Vikings
Once you’ve uncovered finds in the pits at DIG, take in the sights, sounds and smells of Viking-age York!
Ever wondered what Vikings ate for tea or what they did in their spare time? Or what kind of smells you’d find in a Viking village? Journey through 10th Century York in a time capsule and discover remarkably well-preserved Viking artefacts (including a Viking poo!) and explore the story behind the ground-breaking Coppergate dig.
Plus, you can see some of the real finds you uncovered in the Viking-age pit at DIG on display at JORVIK!
Uncover one of the largest hoards ever found in the UK
This year at JORVIK, you’ll also be able to uncover one of the largest hoards ever discovered in the UK. Found in a lead container in Lancashire, the Silverdale Hoard is comprised of over 200 pieces of silver rings, hacksilver and coins of Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Arabic origin. Providing a fascinating window into AD900 – a time when the trading town of Jorvik was at its peak – this hoard is a must-see in York this Spring. Don’t forget to pick up a souvenir – you can get a special edition Silverdale coin when you visit JORVIK.
