The ‘Carnival’ is coming to York!

Derwent Danceworks celebrate 10th anniversary with inspiring Stage Show

York-based Derwent Danceworks, an IDTA School of Dance & Performing Arts, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with the elaborate show ‘Carnival’ at Joseph Rowntree School, running from 8th – 10th March.

Derwent Danceworks is marking this milestone with a spectacular show called ‘Carnival’ at Joseph Rowntree School. ‘Carnival’ has been choreographed by Derwent Danceworks’ Principal, Kate Womersley (AIDTA), with assistance from her team of inspiring teachers. The students have been working so hard, being so amazingly creative and professional – there are even some Disney Princesses to add to the magic!

“It’s so special to give children first-hand experience of performing on a stage and in front of an audience – creating a childhood memory I hope they cherish,” explains Kate. “With the success of popular TV shows ‘The Greatest Dancer’ and ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ it is lovely that the children can dress up in beautiful costumes, have the fun of learning and performing new dances but of course without the pressure of the judges! Expressing your emotions through dance, singing and drama is a wonderfully enjoyable activity.”

During the last ten years Kate has created a thriving and well respected Dance & Drama School in the York area, with constantly evolving classes, creative vibe and excellent success in pupil exam results for all classes. With lessons in Thorganby (near Wheldrake), Escrick and South Bank, her goal is to make dance accessible to as many people as possible – children, teenagers and adults:

“The emphasis is still to provide high quality, affordable dance classes to children and adults but with the aim to share and inspire the love of dance,” explains Kate whose drive and enthusiasm is infectious. “Over this last decade, I’ve taught hundreds of children, with many taking multiple classes, and then had the pleasure of also teaching their siblings and even their mums! We cover everything from traditional ballet, tap, jazz right through to current Street, Acro and Contemporary.”

Although classes are primarily aimed at children from the age of 2 to 16 years old, Kate has been thrilled with the number of adults also taking up classes, with StreetFit® being her most popular choice: “People seem to find the adult classes fun, surprisingly relaxing and something a bit different. At the end of the evening, they leave feeling uplifted and energised and having enjoyed a full workout!”.
