When somebody has Down syndrome, it means that they were born with an extra chromosome.
Typically people have 46 chromosomes; 23 pairs. When somebody has Down syndrome, they have an extra chromosome in the 21st pair. Because of this, every year we celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on the 21st March (21/3).
People with Down syndrome can and do lead incredibly fulfilling lives, and with increased public awareness and a little support, we believe that the whole of society can benefit from greater inclusion.
York Down Syndrome Support Group is a volunteer led group that aims to support people with Down syndrome, their families, and the professionals that work with them. This support includes:
- speech and language groups
- social events
- early development groups
- training for parents and professionals
One of the traditions on World Down Syndrome Day is to wear odd socks. This is to celebrate everyone’s uniqueness (and because socks look a bit like chromosomes 😃)
For this year’s World Down Syndrome Day we’d love you to show your support by wearing odd socks and completing the
odd socks colouring page. When you’re done, stick the page in your window and share your pictures and odd socks on our Facebook page with the tag #WDSD21
Thank you so much for supporting our fantastic community and we look forward to seeing your pictures! 😍😍
