Discover a hidden medieval gem!

Barley Hall is a picturesque medieval townhouse tucked away down one of the oldest streets in York. Once home to the Priors of Nostell and a Lord Mayor of York, Barley Hall has now been lovingly restored to its original splendour with stunning high ceilings, beautiful exposed timber frames, and possibly the only horn window in England. Little ones can make themselves at home, join in dress-up fun and activities and experience what it would have been like to live in medieval England.

This Spring is your last chance to see The Bard at Barley Hall! See costumes worn by celebrities such as Al Pacino and Kate Winslet, have a go at shadow puppet theatre and guess the Shakespeare play from the smell box.

MORE ABOUT THE SOUNDMARKS EXHIBITION HERE

Now thereā€™s a new way to take a look into the past as you explore North Yorkshireā€™s County Town, guided by the ā€˜Discover Northallertonā€™ app in the palm of your hand.

Discover more about the heritage of Northallerton and uncover hidden stories of fascinating people, places and events that shaped this historic market town through the centuries.

With 2 trails, there is loads of fun to be had!

ā€˜Autumnfest trail with the Mowbreesā€™Ā enjoying the sights as we watered Tinker Mowbreeā€™s veggie patch near the phone box, threw conkers in Applegarth Park, searched for treats hiding in pumpkins in Zetland Street, and danced with the twins, Violet and Spike Mowbree, by the pedestrian crossing!

ā€˜Portals into the Pastā€™ entitles the second trail, which is packed with information about the history of the town and we had chance to have a little look, but would love to return another day to take in the details of the trail.Ā  Here you can uncover Northallertonā€™s hidden stories of fascinating people, places and events, including the Town Hall and Shambles, the Rutson Hospital, Register House, and the original site of Northallerton Grammar School before it moved to Grammar School Lane and then became Northallerton College.Ā  This would be a great trail for schools to use as part of a local history project.

A collaboration between the Bar Convent and Fairfax House

2 March- 27 April (closed on Sundays)

Thereā€™s plenty for families to do this Easter at the Yorkshire Air Museum!

We have our Hidden Harriers Trail ā€“ search the museum for H the Harrier Jump Jet, our new mascot. There are ten Hs hiding around the museum, each one with a letter attached. Collect them all and unscramble the letters to form a word and get an ā€˜Hā€™ the Harrier sticker.

We also have Buccaneer Day on April 6th, marking 30 years since this Yorkshire-built jet left service in the RAF. Our three ā€˜Buccsā€™ will be on display side by side, with one them doing a live engine run! Included with admission.
