A Christmas Masquerade (Saturday 16th November – Sunday 5th January)
Enjoy a truly magical day out as Castle Howard is transformed for the festive season. Experience the magnificent decorations as you journey through the House’s grand state rooms. Open fires, candle light and live music evoke all that we love about this special time of year, with the iconic 25 foot traditional Christmas tree adorned with over 3000 baubles providing a breath-taking highlight in the Great Hall.
Inspirational design team Charlotte Lloyd Webber and Bretta Gereke have worked with the theme ‘A Christmas Masquerade’ to produce a stunning array of flamboyant displays and installations to surprise and delight visitors of all ages. The Castle Howard “Christmas Masquerade” celebrates the House’s theatrical roots and the influence of the Italian Baroque on its magnificent architecture and interiors.
The House prepares for a grand masked ball inspired by the Venetian Carnival to be held in the Long Gallery spectacularly adorned as the Grand Canal. Amongst the sumptuous decorations and awe inspiring costumes, a troupe of travelling players prepare festive entertainments for the guests. These ebullient, mischievous characters – Harlequin, Colombine, Pierrot and the Zanni Clown are part of the famous Commedia dell Arte who became the much-loved characters of the pantomimes that remain one of our best beloved Christmas traditions. A magical immersive experience that will embody the spirit of the season in true Castle Howard style.
It is easy to spend a full day here as you soak up the jovial atmosphere, enjoy an array of indulgent winter warmers across our catering outlets and complete your Christmas shopping in our Gift Shops, Farm Shop and Garden Centre.
And don’t miss the opportunity to meet the big man himself as Father Christmas will be making some very special visits. (Tickets to meet Father Christmas will go on sale at 8am on Tuesday 10th September 2019).

Our most magical event of the year returns again in 2019.
There is a reason why families return year after year to join us for our City Cruises York Santa Experience, it really is the most magical event on the River Ouse!
Santa clearly works hard all year around and especially in December when he somehow manages to find the time to visit all of the especially well behaved boys and girls before Christmas, and he tells us that the City Cruises York Santa Experience is the most unique venue that he visits in the city.
Your Santa experience begins as you are welcomed into our Grotto, cleverly hidden away underneath the beautiful Lendal Bridge. Upon entering, the Captain will check all of the children off the special list that we receive from Lapland. If you have any pushchairs, then you are welcome to leave these in the safety of our Reindeer Pen (they will all be away on business with Santa at this time so there will be plenty of room).
You will then be warmly greeted by one of Santa’s good friends, Mary Christmas or Ernie the Elf who will gladly show you to your reserved seating and distribute the magic bells.
And we can’t tell you too much more about what happens next, that would spoil the magic. But we can guarantee that Santa Claus himself will find his way aboard and the whole family will have the most wonderful time on board our Santa Experience in 2019.
Each child will be hand delivered a personalised present from Santa whilst everybody on board will enjoy refreshments, fun and surprises, making this a Christmas treat to remember.

Meet St Nicholas and Lady Winter in their Yuletide grottos this Christmas.
Enjoy a glass of hot punch (alcoholic and non alcoholic available), before being taken to the woodland grotto to make a wish with Lady Winter and then a short story with St Nicholas, aimed at the whole family. Each session can only hold up to 40 people maximum, so book early to avoid missing out. Expected duration is 1 hour and 10 minutes from the start time.
Our St Nicholas mirrors the Father Christmas of the past: a wandering storyteller, miracle-worker and a protector of children, bringing light, generosity, abundance and celebration to the dark months of winter. He is one of the fairy folk: the Holly King, clothed all in green and crowned in evergreens and ivy. Lady Winter, his female counterpart, is the introspective part of winter. In her grotto, experience the beauty in the barrenness of winter, which she tells us brings an opportunity to rest, to be still and to dream. She shows us the gift of silence and inner strength that can be found find in the cold and solitude winter brings.
Please be aware, if you are looking for a flashy, commercialised event with a red-suited Santa; please look elsewhere for your festivities or risk disappointment. This Christmas will be an atmospheric Christmas of stories, candles and imagination.
Children won’t receive a cheap toy but something more meaningful and symbolic instead, as well as chocolate coin.

A Dickensian Christmas on Kirkgate
Every weekend, 16th November — 24th December 2019
Step foot into a story book full of Dickensian characters and surround yourself in the magic of Christmas past at York Castle Museum this festive season.
Every weekend from November 16 the museum’s decorated Victorian street Kirkgate will come to life – will you spot Ebenezer Scrooge as he walks the cobbles or other famous Charles Dickens characters such as Fagin and the Artful Dodger from Oliver Twist.
Shops will be stocked with festive displays and the street will be full of the sounds of the season, including choirs performing by the twinkling Christmas tree.
There is also the chance to create unforgettable memories with York’s favourite Father Christmas as he talks to children ahead of his busiest time of year.
Jo Killeya, head of public programming, said: “This year we have embraced the magic of Charles Dickens’ stories to create a fantastically festive Victorian Christmas experience.
“Ebenezer Scrooge will take visitors on a journey of redemption in an immersive one-man show of A Christmas Carol. Our authentic Victorian shops have some special guests such as Oliver Twist’s Mrs Mann who is out looking for some last minute shopping but always has a moment for a quick gossip along the way.
“But watch out for the mischievous Artful Dodger as he tries to earn a few extra pennies and beware – Fagin is in the mood to pick a pocket or two as he performs magic tricks on unsuspecting passers-by.
“Together with carols by community choirs, the wonderfully decorated street and of course the chance to meet Father Christmas, we hope people will come and soak up the Victorian sights, sounds and traditions which helped shape how we celebrate Christmas today.”
There will also two special performances entitled An Evening with Ebenezer Scrooge on Monday December 16 and Friday December 20, from 7pm to 9:30pm. Walk along the cobbles of Kirkgate for an immersive and intimate production of A Christmas Carol, which brings the magic of a much loved Dickens’ classic to life.
