If you need a local support service to help you and your family with food, we’ve listed places that can help you below.

Including Community Cafes, food banks and pay-as-you-feel services, all the details are listed below.

The Door 84 community café gives local residents of all ages an opportunity to meet, chat and socialise with other community members.  The Café runs every Friday from 11am to 1pm.

Food and drink is available to purchase (pay as you feel).

The community food stall can also be accessed whilst the café is open, providing fresh fruit and vegetables, pasta, sauces, biscuits, rice and drinks – as well as household products and toiletries – all donated to Door 84 to share with the community.

The Haxby Food Share Project is an initiative set up to help people in the Haxby and Wigginton area. It’s overseen by the Memorial Hall, in partnership with Haxby’s Local Area Co-ordinator from the City of York Council.

Every Wednesday and Friday lunchtime, the team distribute food gifted by the community, local shops, businesses and other food collection services.

If you’d like some free food or other goods to help support yourself or your family please come along and pick what you need. Everyone is welcome — no referral or voucher is needed, and no questions are asked. Hopefully it will make life a little easier.

Every Wednesday between 11am and 1:30pm and every Friday between 12pm and 1:30pm

Located in the garden at the back of the Memorial Hall in Haxby

Tang Hall Community Centre offers several services including:

Your Cafe – A cafe serving tea, coffee and homemade cakes which operates on a “pay as you feel able” basis. Find out more information here. Open Wednesdays 11am – 12noon

Community Canteen – a free family sit down meal on Thursdays at 4pm

Breakfast Club – Breakfast Club and advice hub for residence within the Tang Hall Big Local Area on Fridays from 9:30am

The Collective Sharehouse is a volunteer led organisation currently supporting around 150 households who live in the Micklegate Ward area of York.

They provide a range of cupboard foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, toiletries and household cleaning products.

​You do not need a voucher to obtain items, but do need to bring along something showing your address (your details will not be recorded.

Open: Tuesdays and Fridays 9:15-11:00 am & Wednesdays 5:00-6:00pm

​Last entry is 15 minutes before the end of the session.

If you need help from York foodbank there are a few simple steps to follow.

THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP IS TO GET A FOODBANK VOUCHER.
Please call for free to talk confidentially to a trained Citizens Advice adviser on:
0808 208 2138 (open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, closed on public holidays).

Alternatively for help in accessing a voucher, you can also call Citizens Advice York on 03 444 111 444, or York Foodbank partner advice helpline on 0300 365 7700 (10am-3pm Monday-Wednesday and Friday).

In order to provide the most appropriate help for the circumstances of your situation York Foodbank work with local agencies. If they feel you are struggling to put food on the table, they will issue you with a foodbank voucher. The local agency can also help provide long term support if needed to help address problems which may be causing you concern or have led to a challenging situation. Agencies we work with include: Citizens Advice, housing support officers, schools, children’s centres, health visitors, social services and some local charities.

1. GET IN TOUCH WITH YORK FOODBANK.
If you call or email our foodbank we can talk through your situation and put you in touch with a relevant local agency.

2. ARRANGE A VISIT TO THE REFERRAL AGENCY.
They will discuss your situation and supply you with a foodbank voucher where appropriate.

3. BRING YOUR FOODBANK VOUCHER TO YOUR NEAREST FOODBANK CENTRE.
When you arrive, you’ll be welcome you with a tea or coffee and the trained volunteers will chat with you about anything you would find helpful. You’ll also discuss any dietary needs you may have and exchange your foodbank voucher for a parcel of three days of emergency food.
