Your Health Visiting Team

York’s Healthy Child Service (HCS) delivers information, advice and support for children and parents of children aged 0 – 19 years old.

The Healthy Child Service incorporates York’s Health Visiting Service and School Nurse Service. We work with families, young people and children to help them achieve the best possible start in life and reach their full potential. We work across the city in teams covering the North, East and West of York. You can find out more about our teams and the services we offer by selecting from the options below:

Health visitors
Who are Health Visitors?
*They are a vital part of our communities and work in partnership with families and other professionals who work with children
*They give speak up for babies and their families
*They are registered nurses or midwives with an additional public health qualification
What do Heath Visitors do?
*They give every baby the best start in life
*They support thousands of families every week
*Provide extra support when families need it most
*Build on families’ strengths
*Spot early problems
*Connect families to the right support and find solutions together
Parents/Carers can contact them any time for advice on their baby/child’s feeding, health, behaviour and with child development questions.

School nurses (5 – 19 years team)

School Nurses (SCPHNS) are qualified nurses with specialist training in Public Health for children, young people and families. SCPHNS lead and deliver the Healthy Child Programme for 5-19 year olds, up to the age of 25 for people with special educational needs and/or disabilities), and their families. Working with and supporting the SCPHN School Nurses are the Children and Young People Health Outreach Nurses (CYPHONS), they are qualified nurses from various nursing backgrounds and have a wealth of knowledge in health for Children and Young People.

National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) Screeners, measure the height and weight of primary school children in Reception and Year 6. The Screeners also carry out a vision and hearing test for children in school. For more information on this and the NCMP please visit the NHS National Child Measurement Programme.

We also work jointly with other groups, including schools, communities, children’s services and children’s charities, to safeguard and promote the welfare of children to improve and reduce health inequalities so they are protected from significant harm.
